50% tariff on Steel, Aluminum and now Copper. Which companies are running back to the states to manufacture? Seems like this is just causing road blocks and making manufacturing more expensive in the states. Do you know which country doesn’t have any of those roadblocks and is willing to work with any country and just so happens to be neighbors to the US?

So Americans will be paying more for anything with copper content. Someone needs to ask Trump or the ditzy blonde press secretary which foreign government department do they send the tariff invoice to. They are still trying to convince the American people that they won’t be the ones paying the additional tariff costs and guess what that’s another lie.

  4. It’s just a copper mine Michael, how long would it take to spin up? 2 days?

Trump has managed to implement what is essentially a draconian tax regime on American businesses and consumers and somehow convinced them that it is all about making the country great again. The guy may be a demonic piece of shit, but he sure can dupe the gullible.

  7. Seems like a wise strategy now that Texas and New Mexico are going to need tons of wire to rebuild flood-damaged homes. Might as well make his base suffer more.

Thats three weeks away. Trump will change his mind at least a dozen times before then.

I wrote this yesterday on a different post. I have worked in mining for years. It really comes down to the US being convenient, not that there is no demand for our copper.

I’m just going to say that Canada exports to Japan and China as well as the States. copper prices are climbing and are expected to double by the end of the decade and triple in the years following that. Out of the 10 largest copper mines in North America, almost all of them are expected to reach their end of „life of mine“, and there has been barely any „green field“ copper mining development in the last 20 years, but cost of development and construction have increased 10x (and that is not including tariffs). That is why we are seeing so many „brown field“ projects where existing mines with infrastructure, permits, and tailing ponds already exist. These mines use a massive amount of hydro and diesel, more than some major cities do, the supply, time, and demand to build that power infrastructure is decades out. We are facing a serious shortage of copper, yet Canada is set to fill that some of that demand. If the US doesn’t want/can’t to pay for our copper, someone else will, and we will have the market cornered on buying equipment. The US is making a serious blunder here.

But we need to make sure we don’t get in our own way. Everyone loves green and modern technology until they see an open pit mine. If we don’t do it here. it will be done in China and South America, and far less ethically.

I read that Trump’s logic is that the global copper industry is following the path of the global rare earth industry. Meaning China is adding new production at a faster and cheaper rate than other countries. So, he would force US businesses to buy US copper to keep the US copper industry alive.

Trump does not believe in allies.
