      The movie „The Mummy“ turned more into „Hey, It’s a TOM CRUISE movie, starring TOM CRUISE!!!“ It seemed more of an attempt to build him up, rather than create an interesting story or build a new monster universe.

      BF’s Mummy movies were Comedy Adventure movies.

      TC’s Mummy movie was a horror movie.

      It’s weird (but nice) to see the 180 on online sentiment towards the Fraser Mummy movies. There was a period of time like 10-15 years ago right before the Brenaissance happened that every obnoxious internet filmbro would tell you how the ’99 Mummy was a cringe, dated Indiana Jones ripoff.

      Unfinished CG in 2 and the overall quality of 3 aside, they are fantastically fun adventure movies with great casts.

      I remember seeing Cruise’s *The Mummy* in the cinema with a big group of friends I had convinced to go. I don’t think I could get people to go back to the cinema with me for at least a year!

      I’m a fan of Cruise movies, imo he makes banger after banger. But this one was a total miss and I agree with Fraser, I wanted that same feeling of adventure and it had none of it

      Also, Arnold Vosloo rocked it as Imhotep!
      He brought some real gravitas to the character.

      The comparison of these two movies is nonstop and you never see it when comparing other films that relate to the same property. No one sits around arguing that Dracula 2000 is nothing like Bram Stoker’s Dracula or that Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro is like the new Wolfman or whatever they were called. It’s pretty fascinating that these two are brought up together so much on Reddit.

      In /r/movies, people act as if they fired Fraser and replaced him with Tom Cruise immediately. It was a franchise that ran its course replaced by a failed franchise.

      I have never seen two projects directly compared to each other outside of the idea that they fall under a property that has had countless versions.

      I thought it was pretty simple. People didn’t understand that TC was the Mummy the title refers too and that they were trying to bring back the monster movies of the past. Where as Fraser franchise borrowed the name but went in a different direction and was more straight forward with a great blend of action and comedy.

      What happened to Fraser? He had his big comeback with the whale and I feel I havent seen him do anything as big so far. And I know batgirl got cancelled but that was long ago. I liked seeing him in the mainstream again.

      Was a reboot even a good idea? It’s not like the Brendan Frasier movies were terribly dated at that point. The last Brendan Frasier movie came out in 2008 and then the Tom Cruise movie comes along just 9 years later in 2017.

      The thing I remember most about the Tom Cruise one is that the actual mummy story seemed to take a back seat to them setting up the whole Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe with Dr Jekyll as the Nick Fury-type.

      Brendan Fraser’s Mummy movie was an entirely self-contained adventure.
