„The federal government should“ lol
This is truly insane. If some masked dude came up to me with zero identification and tried to take me away.
How the fuck hasn’t anyone got hurt yet? That’s the question. I don’t understand.
Some of the key portions of this opinion:
>But if immigration enforcement is more aggressive and visible than in the past, it is also more anonymous: ICE allows its agents to conduct operations in plain clothes and to cover their faces. Social media is flooded with images of masked men in streetclothes forcing people into unmarked cars.
>
>This approach looks scary. It is scary. And it’s a grave mistake. In keeping with the values of the local police, the federal government should prohibit the wearing of masks by its officers and require them to properly identify themselves. These are the minimal requirements of policing a free state—regardless of how you feel about the administration’s stance on immigration. You can support ambitious deportation targets without sanctioning anonymous policing.
>
>The main reason federal agents give for wearing masks is their fear of doxxing: the practice of sharing a person’s identity and contact information with the malicious intent of targeting them for harassment, threats, and possibly violence. Federal agents and their families deserve privacy and safety, but the government already has a means of protecting them: It can enforce the laws against harassment and threats, online or in person. Or Congress could pass an existing bill that explicitly makes doxxing federal law-enforcement agents illegal.
>
>At any rate, everyone in government today is vulnerable to doxxing, including countless public servants who have no option to hide their identity as they work. Should a pool of judges issue anonymous verdicts? Should legislators pass bills by secret ballot? The answers are obvious. Wearing a badge is thought to require, and should require, more bravery than serving on a state assembly. Our police should be the (literal) face of the nation’s courage, unafraid to show the public who they are.
>
>Perhaps most important, wearing masks could expose federal agents, local police, and the public to physical dangers that make the risks of doxxing seem minor in comparison. Armed, masked men appear sinister, even predatory. Beyond obscuring the facial expressions we use for cues about whether a person is a threat, masks are a marker of criminals looking to intimidate their prey while avoiding identification. This is why the ski mask is a cultural trope of the armed robber or terrorist. It is also why masked protesters undermine their own causes; the masks arouse deep suspicion, as bystanders may assume the protesters are just waiting for an opportune moment to break the law.

>Many people on the left, perennially skeptical of how our nation is policed, think masking by federal agents is wrong. But so does the right-libertarian CATO Institute, which recently published an argument critical of mask wearing. It asked, “At what point will we as a nation find ourselves with a secret police?” A former FBI agent and a former Department of Homeland Security attorney have also spoken up against masking.

>The driving principle here is obvious: In a free society, people should know who is policing them. To codify this sentiment in the law, New York legislators have proposed a ban on mask wearing by ICE agents, and California legislators have put forward a bill that would ban federal, state, and local police from wearing masks when interacting with the public. (The California bill exempts members of SWAT teams conducting tactical operations if a mask could reduce exposure to heat, fire, chemicals, and contaminants.) The legislation addresses a crucial issue, but it exemplifies the overkill of our times: We shouldn’t need a law to ensure a basic feature of transparent policing. Federal agencies should adopt this policy as a matter of course.

>Descending on a person in public, laying hands on them, and taking them to a distant prison is a naked expression of state power. For it to be tolerated in a democracy committed to an inalienable right to liberty, it must be just that: naked. It cannot be done by shadowy, masked agents.
These are some important issues that the public and public representatives need to consider. By having law enforcement act in such a shadowy way, a democracy very quickly becomes a police state. This should be an uncontroversial position for all who believe in democracy, left or right.
These fascist pigs have already shown a disregard for the law. Why would any law prohibiting them from wearing masks change that? They’re effectively operating outside the law as it is. I feel like this would do nothing.
We shouldn’t be protecting neo nazis America.
If they’re wearing a mask and not identifying themselves, that’s just a regular kidnapping.
If you’re afraid of being identified doing your job, maybe you should be looking for other work.
Maybe we can use infrared cameras to see through the masks. Coupled with face recognition technology we can begin to figure out who these goons are and knock them back a peg.
The way ice is funded, there won’t be anyone able to tell them what to do by 2028. If Republicans decide they don’t like the results of the election they won’t just have random maga freaks to call in for their next coup.
Bet every one of these bastards complained about masks during the pandemic.
When they’re unmasked, we’re going to learn they’re all Proud Boys and Oath Keepers and white supremacist militia members who’ve been standing back and standing by until now…
**“But that would put them at risk“**
… of being prosecuted under 18 U.S.C. § 242 (Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law) when Trump et. al. are out of power. A charge that can be escalated to a capital offense when it includes kidnapping or the death of a person.
I’m pretty sure that we have lots of precedent law requiring federal agents to identify themselves. We need to enforce them via civil torts…whenever we can.
Proud Boys.
Patriot Front.
One Percenters.
Aryan Brotherhood.
Didn’t want to wear masks during a pandemic, but now ICE agents are cosplaying Antifa. Fascism’s funny like that.
They are doing this because the very AI Clearview will be used against them too. That’s it. It’s not about safety. It’s about them NOT wanting to be screened through Clearview Ai.
They also now take photos of onlookers whose pictures will be run through Clearview Ai. My opinion.
The Cato institute is right. ICE is now Trump’s secret police.
Their actions also directly led America to this point.
Of course, but also it’s not going to happen just because people ask nicely.
They’ll fight this so hard. It’s going to come out that the Trump administration deputized white supremacist groups and J6 convicts who were pardoned. I don’t know if that’ll be the final star or not, but it’s going to piss a lot of people off.
The people who are taking this job also fear retribution. That’s why they’re wearing the masks, so they can’t be identified by their communities.
I am old enough to remember right wing conspiracy nuts hating on the FBI because of the Waco tragedy.
But when there are masked ICE agents throwing people in vans? Silence.
Some bloody consistency would be nice.
Why? Then you would find out they are just regular Nazis kidnapping people.
Hey, guess who runs the federal government
5 years ago these same folks didn’t wanna wear a mask
They might as well be honest and just wear their Proud Boys jackets
ICE is America’s gestapo. You can’t change my mind
No, the message should be „abolish ICE“.
If they took off the masks it would be too easily to spot all the various scum they employ – racists, militia members, criminals et al. The party of „law and order“ (what a crock) doesn’t want you to see how many criminals they employ to enforce their demands.
If not undercover when making an arrest they are supposed to do so, not doing so can get the person’s case dismissed depending on circumstances….
But why care about that when you’re a fascist who is disappearing people and not sending them to court?
They should be made to wear uniform, have proper identification, and must never wear face coverings. I don’t get how this is so controversial.
It amazes me that these are the same people who bitched and moaned about having to wear a mask during Covid
Of course they should. And that’s exactly why they won’t.
The masks are endangering Americans. No warrants and no due process protocols are opening the door to criminal activity. Americans can’t trust anyone at their door right now. ICE has no training to work with people. This is inhumane and illegal.
