Idk, the country doesn’t have a lot of resources. Maybe focusing all the higher education effort in one place makes sense, at least for public schools
It varies, and it’s often not good to have them in the city center, because the commute [edit:robs] the students of too much time.
Here in Sweden, even though KTH students were better, Uppsala students wrote theses of comparable quality simply because less of their time was wasted.
1. I think the academic city 8s a good idea, to create a collective environment for students and researchers. The backslash is mostly due to extreme conservatism.
2. I think that now wan not the time though, that money should have been given to PhD students and professors, PhD students earn ridiculously low salary in Armenia.

Also, no, lol. A lot of cities around the world have academic districts (e.g. Zurich). This was it is cheaper to expand the infrastructure and create a geographical focus area for students and youth.
Universities like YSU are not being kicked out of their main buildings, but their more modernized ones will now be in the academic city.
We should move government buildings from downtown not universities.

What about the long term benefits? Let’s say in 10-20 years there is a need to expand those universities and there is no space left in Yerevan. What are they gonna do? Or more students start going to university from provinces and other countries. How is Yerevan going to accommodate all those people without effecting housing prices and city traffic?
Also I’m sure he is not making these decisions single handily and has people with university degrees consulting him
visited polytechnic in 2014, I can tell you that it need a huge reconstruction and remodeling from inside and outside…starting from the toilets. It will cost more than building a new one.

I went to one of the „top“ universities in Canada („civilized“, per your words), and not only was this university NOT in the city centre, but it was part of its own academic city.

I’m honestly not sure why they decided to build a city from scratch. They could just move the universities to another city. It would be so much easier to build since there would be some existing infrastructure already. On top of that, or would create new jobs allowing regional economies to develop since most of the wealth is concentrated in Yerevan.
Lmao, for better or for worse, university students in the city often use that time to work while they study and socialize. This move would cut off/add friction to the labor market,
It would add further hurdles to students which if they would be unable to find work in a separate academic city would need to either take on more loans or forego costlier options that they could manage now,
It would also cut off a major revenue stream for businesses since even if they don’t directly spend, their presence is useful for adding „life“ to an already scarce city life at times. Reducing the city’s diversity by taking away its young people is manageable, sure, but a major turnoff when you keep on seeing the same type of social groups out.
Have to agree with OP here that Yerevan’s structure (and small size) is more suited for a European model of integrated campuses rather than unnecessarily spending much needed funding that could be used on existing half-assed infrastructure on moving academic institutions out. This is some backwards evolution smh.
I never get the hate against changing the location of the universities. Its extremely expensive to live in the city center and having universities in the city center is not very good. Moving it out of the city center will:
1) decrease prices of rent for students
2) cheaper to expand university facilities
It is common in many cities to not have universities in the center of a city. Especially a city with extremely high rent.
