We are never getting a fair deal that will stick. Trump doesn’t believe in win-win. He only believes in “there’s one winner and the rest are losers”. The quicker the government pivots from this the better it is for all of us. It’ll hurt. But the USA is on a path of self destruction right now. We may as well steer clear.
Move on already. It was widely opposed in Canada as well, including by Canada’s own business community, who ended up having to actually pay it after Google and others started levying surcharges on their invoices for advertising and cloud services against their Canadian business clients to make up for it.
It was bad policy in the first place, and if anything, Carney was happy this gave him an excuse to kill this Justin holdover. He even basically implied it on Monday.

There’s a case to be made for waning Canadian influence in media and the Americanization of Canadian used digital spaces. That said, I don’t know if we were going to get much more than a bargaining chip (at best) out of the digital service tax unless we have a multilateral approach. There’s definitely policy such giving the CBC a mandate for more Canadian media that might serve these issues better.
Part of Carney’s appeal during the election was that he seemed far less likely to capitulate than PP on Trump’s demands. Unless Carney’s strategy is delaying direct conflict as he tries to redirect Canada’s trade elsewhere, this could easily be him extending hand to someone we’re not going to get one back from.
We don’t yet know if the US made any concessions in return. Canada is not playing our hand in public so will take time to figure out if we are playing Trump or the other way around.

It is never enough for Trump and the Republican supporters that got him there.
Trump stopped talks regarding the digital tax. Said he’d resume if they were lifted.
Carney tested the waters and lifted the tax. Trump failed, requesting *more* in order to resume talks.
It will never be enough. Shut down trade with the US. *ALL* trade coming from there or going to there. Cut off the power. Cut off the fuel. Cut off the potash. Cut off the lumber, *everything*. Trump stated again and again and again that they don’t need us. That we are worthless without them. Then low key Trump wants us. Then threatens us if we aren’t together. Then offers token gestures and promises if we join them.
Dealing with Trump is like dealing with an abusive boyfriend/girlfriend. We look at what the Republicans and their government have done and how they have treated their own people and we are disgusted.
It will never be enough, even if they take everything from us by force or coercion.
Cut them off. Now.
I voted for Carney.
But did so on the expectation there would be a principled, smart, measured „stand up“ to the Americans. Standing on what’s important, giving where advantageous, and negotiating from a position of sovereignty.
I expect that to be the path moving forward, even if it involves some pain. Carney – I think – is smart enough to know that. The tax wasn’t worth the fight and, as he’s said, could be part of the broader negotiation.
Find the right hill to die on.
If this isn’t the way forward, I’ll be looking for other leadership come next election.
“ IF“?? Carney is counting on one crisis/ demand after another from Trump to distract Canadians from his goal of “ managed decline“ by mass immigration and increasing National debt. First came Carney’s tariffs, no attempt to forge new trade agreements with other Countries. UK blind sided Carney by making their own trade deal with Trump. Next we have $Billions announced for military spending because Trump insisted Canada pay for his Security Dome program, money Canada does not have. Now Pucker Up Carney caves on digital tax! Carney has the immigration flood gates wide open, no new pipelines, new vehicle mandates with not enough grid capacity nor reliable battery technology for all vehicles! Removing inter- provincial trade barriers now gives ON and QC economies of scale to flood the other provinces with products, close breweries, and have tradesmen show up in droves taking work from local tradesmen!!! And so it goes…. but people thought Carney was here to help… hilarious!!
I’m not a liberal fan by any stretch of the means, but hear me out.
Carney by all metrics is probably more conservative then some concervatives on what his agenda is…even the major news networks are pointing this out by using a lot of the conservatives platform for kick starting our economy and lessening the blow from down south.
In any deal to be made by anyone, there is generally an act of good faith by one or more parties involved to get the discussions going. The DST hasn’t been mandated into law and low hanging fruit for Carney throw away as an act of good faith.
Carney is no slouch at making money and has a completely different tactic on how to do it than Donald’s approach of bullying to submission. Carney is that quiet kid in class who is literally looking at all the options and optics. Looking into the finer details that his competition will miss. He’s looking at the long-term game and not just for tomorrow’s news headline.
Trump and his advisors know at some point, they will be backed into a corner on Key issues… critical minerals, oil, pot ash, fresh water and even softwood lumber and hydro. The American way of life depends on a safe, reliable supply of all of it for its military, housing, and industry. There is plenty of room for Carney to make up for the loss of the DST in the smaller print.
The world will be watching how this negotiation goes and the outcomes. In the eyes of the world, this could determine how the USA is viewed from using the green back as the standard currency of trade to ultimately who the dominant superpower of trade is.
