The way they ride is a fucking joke – while you do see cars pushing it at red lights, you literally never see a red light with just cars continuing to plough through. Same as zebra crossing – you might get one nobend who pushed it, but you don’t have dozens of them just piling through.
I’m a cyclist, I’m (obviously) pro cyclist, but these cyclists do nobody any favours and just further drive some pretty well founded hatred for themselves.
I used to work in London and there was a
crossing on one of those cycle superway things that was basically a gauntlet of death at rush hour. I got hit/clipped by cyclists a number of times
The City of London is not „London“ – it has it’s own police force who devote a lot of resources to specifically catching red light jumping cyclists, which is frankly like shooting fish in a barrel for them. If they were car drivers the headline would be „Police force raises tens of thousands in traffic fines“
Car drivers are 10 times less likely to be caught because the traffic is nose to tail throughout the entire square mile.
With that clarification mind, let’s all now have a sensible and well informed debate about road safety shall we?
I very rarely see car drivers run red lights in London, and when they do it’s some impatient white van man just squeezing through on the light change. But cyclists often seem to ignore the lights completely, especially at pedestrian crossings. Happy they’re getting more focus.
I cycle in London, not often the City of London, but general Zone 1 & 2.
I think there’s a line that cyclists cross often with these things, and I try to stay on the right side of that line as often as possible – occasionally I’ll go onto the pavement and wheel the bike across a crossing, but I agree some cyclists do take the piss.
However, what isn’t really spoken about, is the number of London pedestrians, with what appears to be a death wish.
Often its tourists or city workers, and they seem to treat London like its some form of fully pedestrianised zone – the numbers of close calls I’ve had with people crossing during green lights, and in between cars without looking through the gaps in traffic is a daily occurrence.
Even weirder, is when they look at you, the cyclist, helmeted and stopping for them, as the one in the wrong on a major London road during rush hour.
What I’m trying to say is, it seems like everyone in London is a bit silly, and out of everyone, the cars are the most predictable people on the road, and often the most courteous.

Any traffic light that does not have dedicated cycling lights is inherently unsafe for cyclists.
Yes, you may get an advanced stop line, but cars get going at the same time, and they will try to overtake you inside of the crossing, which is neither legal nor safe.
So, (poorly designed) traffic lights are killing cyclists.
London cyclists seemingly treat traffic lights like motorists treat speed limits.
Strangely only one group is widely hated for this scofflaw behaviour, even though the other does massively more harm.
As a fellow cyclist, it’s frustrating to see so many riders blow through red lights and crossings, it just fuels the anti-bike sentiment and makes the roads less safe for everyone.
When was the last time you saw red lights and cars didn’t jump them? There’s basically zero enforcement for cars.
I mean, I am a pretty big cyclist defender, but this is just a game of statistics, innit. If 20% of 5% is way less than 10% of 90%.
I’ve only seen a few motorists jump red lights, or cross zebras before I’m off of them. I have also only seen a few cyclists stop at red lights or zebra crossings in my time here.
If there are half the number of cyclists as cars, and 5% of cars jump reds, and police catch 90% of those, they’re still catching less people than if the police catch 50% of the 90% of cyclists who jump reds.
I see a lot of arguments about cyclists being wrong uns, and which they’d rather get hit by. But I don’t see any discussion about what cyclists would rather hit. Seemingly some cyclists would rather hit something going in the opposite direction to them than stop. I don’t imagine that cycling into a truck is much fun.
Not in london but I almost hit a cyclist 2 days ago because he just plowed on straight through a red light at 11pm while not wearing anything high vis, about 10 foot in front of my car as I was turning at a t junction.
Slightly off topic, I was in Oxford at the weekend and traveled back on the Park and Ride bus at around 11pm.
I couldn’t beleive the number of cyclists I saw on the main road with no lights, no reflectors of any kind, and wearing dark clothing. I would say it was a good 90% of them. What is wrong with people?
When I was last in London, both the City and elsewhere in Zone 1, it was common to see cyclists jumping reds everywhere.
I was walking from the Hyde Park Corner roundabout across to Picadilly, when I nearly got hit by someone on a Lime bike, shouted „You’re not meant to go through reds!“, got a middle finger back.
I did notice it more with rental bikes, with Lime users being the worst, followed by TfL bikes, although I also nearly got hit by someone on a rental scooter too. They dismounted at a crossing at speed and let the bike nearly hit me, my wife and another couple that were crossing, they started walking as soon as they dismounted.
There was an accident a couple of months ago near Shoreditch that my sister witnessed; a car had stopped at a zebra crossing for her and the cyclist went into the back of the windscreen as they were not intending to stop or even slow down on approach. She thought at first the sound of the impact was a firework it was that loud. I’m also a regular cyclist and obey all rules of the road no matter what.
When a cyclist jumps a red, they assume the risk themselves.
When a car jumps a red, they create a risk to others.
A key distinction people don’t like to acknowledge, doesn’t make it ‘right’, but the two events aren’t comparable because the consequences of a crash are drastically different.
I was waiting to cross the road at a crossing on Borough High Street the other day.
Traffic lights go red, only to have 7/8 bicycles just push on through like it didn’t apply to them.
I called one a cunt and he proceeded to stop, come over and ask me what my problem was.
They live in a world of their own, particularly those who use a bicycle for pushing on with their own fitness/performance. They HATE to lose any sort of momentum and won’t let silly things like regulatory traffic signals get in their way.
I explained to him why he was a cunt and his response was „There was nobody crossing, so what does it matter“.

Selective vision these people have and it’s no better than drivers using phones. They’re a fucking danger.
Yeah but they’re also probably 100 times more likely to actually jump a red light.
You need to look at it in relative terms
Traffic lights are designed to stop cars hitting each other. They are largely irrelevant to someone on a bike and if anything make junctions more dangerous for people on bikes.
I welcome ticketing people jumping red lights, but I don’t see anyone ticketing drivers doing 21 in a 20mile zone.
I hate cyclist. And I’m a cyclist myself. Is it really that hard to respect redlights and shit?
10x more likely, but they aren’t – because they don’t have registration plates, insurance or tax. and are basically invisible to the system.
We need something. I know some awesome cyclists – yet I often come across the worst cyclists – who literally use their bodies as bumpers „If they hit me then i get a pay day“ mentality.
