Lmao. Of all counties, you’ve decided to try and complain about flags IN YORKSHIRE.

    3. >The motion reads: „City of Doncaster Council serves all residents and must maintain absolute political neutrality. Council property belongs to all residents and should reflect our shared national identity, not particular causes, campaigns, or interest groups.

      >“The Union Flag stands as the ultimate symbol of our United Kingdom, embodying centuries of shared history, sacrifice, and achievement that bind together all who call this nation home, regardless of background, belief, or origin.

Has there been a problem flying flags in the past? Do people get upset if the Yorkshire flag flies?

I get the feeling this is less about being ‚politically neutral‘ and more about not liking one or two very specific flags.

    4. Classic stunt policy of theirs that draws headlines but does Jack Squat in application

Farage can leave Yorkshire and all his reform voting Igor’s. I’d sooner the British flag be removed than the Yorkshire one. Yorkshire first, always.

    6. The White Rose of Yorkshire is one of the most traditional heraldic symbols we (well, Yorkshiremen/women) still use today. I’m just a southern fairy and I still feel a wave of civic pride to see the white rose flying.

If anything, in my opinion, we should try and fly our local (county/town) flags as much as possible – they often have really cool designs, they create a sense of community and why not?

      Very “unpatriotic”.

As long as we’re not flying Nazi Swastikas, ISIS flags and the likes, I couldn’t give a shite what flags we flew. I think there’s more pressing matters going on in the world for us to be hung up on flags, bloody mental..

      I am from Lancashire

I will fight to the death for my natural born enemy’s right to fly the white rose of cowardice and defeat!

Always cracks me up when people get obsessed with the Union Jack or St George flag.

Saint George was a Turkish dude who was raised in Palestine, and never visited or had any connection with the UK. He basically spent his life in holy wars migrating from country to country with the other troops.

The idea that Reformers are using the flag as the poster child for Britishness is fucking hilarious.

    10. Yorkshire is the only county I’ve been to where they willingly chant the name of the county at pretty much any sporting/cutural event they can. This probably isn’t a great idea.

    11. ash_ninetyone on

And it will somehow resonate with their voter base who think „we r losing are country“ because Reform barely have any real policies

The policies they do have are harmful that they bury them under nationalist rhetoric and culture war bollocks to hide that.

    12. TheKungFooNun on

First they came for the pride flags and ‚i‘ didn’t care because.. gays, then they took the Palestine flag, ‚i‘ didn’t care because.. now they’re taking ‚my‘ armed forces flag, now ‚i‘ care..
It’s like the Americans w trump, too many uninterested voters listening to the words of a man getting rich off your poverty and encouraging you with your fears and hatred.. but go for it, vote farage and see what state we’ll be in then.. its like no one ever learns, we literally voted for our own demise with brexit, it’s all proven to be a mistake now, but I guess your gonna blame the current leader for that even though he was nothing to do with it at the time, we see america having made one fo the dumbest decisions in the world, far worse than brexit, and yet so many people are willing to just walk off that plank for the reason of having seen him with a pint in his hand..

    13. What a Cluster fuck. We’re already starting to see some MAGA Americans realise they’ve fucked themselves over by making Culture war politics their entire personality. The same thing is gonna happen here.

    14. Desnowshaite on

I suspect when someone talks about „people not wanting this and that“ they really just talk about their own feelings and beliefs and then project it to a wider group without any actual basis to it apart from talking to like 6 people in total.

The „It offends people!“ should always be required to be backed up with an actual research to show which people we are talking about because I am certain that a very large majority of the entire population just doesn’t care at all.

    15. Important_Ruin on

      Armed Forces?

I guess Putin doesn’t like us celebrating our military so has told Nigel to take it down.

How has this man made it so far, can the media spear him and his compromised positions and utterly stupid dog whistle polices and hang that Brexit chain around his fucking neck like a £100bn weight it is to the UK economy.

    16. Convincing_Tree on

What a load of bollocks. Collect my bins, fix potholes and stfu about flags. Pointless.

    17. What is with rightwing dickheads and their obsession with flags? US is even worse. It’s a bit of coloured cloth…who fcking cares?

    18. Euclid_Interloper on

‚Let’s be honest, any flag that isn’t the Union Flag carries a statement. Sometimes that statement is cultural. Sometimes it’s political. ‚

The UK is literally a centuries-long cultural and political project. One country built out of four distinct nations. You can’t get more political than that.

    19. „Labour and the council establishment may not hear what we hear, because they’re sat in the comfort of an echo chamber. But when you step outside it, when you talk to working people across Doncaster you hear something very different: they want pride back in our country, our communities, and our institutions.“

I think if you talked to working people they would be outraged that their elected representatives are wasting time on such nonsense when they have a proper job to do

    20. ruffianrevolution on

„It adds that the flying of any flags or symbols which are not the Union Flag, … „undermines the Council’s duty to serve all residents equally and risks politicising civic spaces that belong to the whole community“

Which sounds like an american idea. Unless he believes Yorkshire people are too dense to know whether they’re gay or not.

    21. While it’s totally abhorrent that they want to ban pride flags, why armed forces flags too? Like you’d think that’d be quite patriotic for reform no?

    22. Babylonbrokenred on

My fav thing about this is that reforms arguments against cultural integration is that it diluted culture and made everything into the same.bland nothingness. Destroying all the cultural differentiation we possess.

And here they are doing just that voluntarily.

I think thqt if people from Yorkshire being proud of their regional foibles isn’t allowed and visibility of any cultural differentiation across the UK is impermissible…. They should also ban all the regional things that we’re proud of.

No more cheddar. Not everywhere has caves like that.
      No more Welsh lamb
Cover up/demolish the white cliffs of Dover as its unrepresentative of Norfolk
No more regional variation in beers. Just John smiths and Worthington for all
No asparagus any more. Fuxking Vale of Evesham getting up itself.
Close down/hide/destroy all beauty spots to get everywhere in line with the west Midlands.
      Make regional accents illegal

This way we can all live in beige uniformity just like how our beige, assembly line reform simpleton overseers would like it.

    23. I’m surprised the Armed Forces flag is included, and is the Yorkshire flag to do with independence? Because the Cornish fly their own flag a lot and that would be included too then.

But really, they’re just in there so the headline doesn’t read ‚Reform to ban Pride flag‘

    24. Yorkshire is probably one of the worst parts of England for them to be making this a hill to die on. Probably only Cornwall competes.

Anyway I’d like to see them try this in Wales/ Scotland/ Northern Ireland, the backlash they’d get would be sensational

    25. Farage is besties with Trump and the assholes in power in America. He will bring all that crap over here. The focus on ‚flags‘ (specifically the pride flag) is a sign of this. Treat him as a foreign invasive species as, politically, that is what he represents.

    26. Old_Course9344 on

      What is „Coun charity“

They are repeatedly mentioned but there is no trace of this anywhere on the net

I specifically wanted to see if it an actual charity and who were the trustees of it.

    27. AceNova2217 on

I mean, I understand the pride flag as it is reform (even though I fundamentally disagree). What the fuck do they want to ban the Yorkshire and armed forces flags for??? I would have thought those would be right up their alley for nationalism.

    28. Why would the people of Best Sussex want to fly a Yorkshire flag? It’s like an enemies flag, soon, very soon the Best Sussex flag will be flapping airily over Yorkshire.

      We’ll have ya‘.

I work in a building that flies the Union Jack and county flag and pride/armed forces day etc. in relevant days. It fails to fly the flags of our various patron saints and I’m sure there are other flags which can’t be accommodated for whatever reasons. Union Jack and county flag, possibly armed forces day seems reasonable. Prevents allegations of favouritism. Saves money on flags as well I suppose.

      > an army veteran and former police officer. I’m the proposer, and I’m gay.

Yes, one person from a group says something – must mean they all think the same!

Also – good on you for joining the leopards eating peoples‘ faces party! The leopards need a rounded diet of different faces to eat!

And not flying the Yorkshire Fucking Rose is so so so so incredibly silly. Its a regional flag that represents everyone in the region.

    32. What’s next, are these top patriots going to start campaigning to take down all the old regimental standards still hanging in cathedrals and parish churches?

This whole saga has been utterly bizarre.

I suspect they thought that it was a genius 5D chess move to dogwhistle homophobia with deniability, but they’ve kind of backed themselves into a weird corner because people simultaneously don’t give a shit about flags flying whilst feeling it’s kind of pathetic to intentionally take down a flag to try and wind people up.

    35. Cynical_Classicist on

Anyone who cares about flags is a prick as far as I’m concerned. Pride, national, whatever. If you care about a flag, you’re someone I want nothing to do with.

    37. I remember during the last election, Richard Rice had an interview where he was banging on about the UK having „too many cultures“ and that we need a „monoculture“ in the UK.

Which is utterly ridiculous, because the UK is literally a country made up of multiple small countries. Are we just going to delete Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland?
