Sale of legal ciggies is down and claimed as a victory for the nanny state. Meanwhile actual ciggie consumption has barely shifted, with the gap served by the black market.
This will just get worse with the new gradual ban policy.
Shit on a minority (smokers, and no, I’m not one of them) to claim a public health win for some future OBEs.

Everyones seen the high street taken over by shops and business that aren’t legit, barbers are easily the worst offenders. It’s all a massive money laundering scheme for foreign gangs
Hooky fags have been a thing for as long as I can remember. If it wasn’t some old dear running to the continent once a month for some spare cash, you’d be able to find some fella dealing them out the back of his van. It was as ubiquitous as pie, and as long as the government restrict access (either by increasing the age, or tax) people will get it, using whatever means they can get their hands on.
Prohibition has never worked. Ever.
Isn’t it all a bit more sinister: fake cigs, fake vapes, drugs under the counter. How do all these random mini-markets with blocked out windows stay open 24h. The social contract is weakening and it is happening before our eyes.
So I don’t get what they expect. You allowed generations to get addicted to tobacco, then you tax the hell out of it and you expect those people now be able to afford and pay those prices. I am not saying I condone illegal behaviour, but this is an issue that the government allowed to get out of hand in the first place.
We all said back in the day when over 1 in 3 people smoked, that the government would loose so much money if people gave up. Look what’s happened they are now making hardly anything from tax on cigarettes because those that still smoke are smoking imported or counterfeit.
So many times over the years I’ve met people smugly showing me their £5 a pack cigarettes. I always warn off them but am waved away. „They’re real, nothing wrong with them“ – I just reply, „we’ll see in 2 weeks“
Fast forward and they’ll sheepishly tell me how they had to buy actual, real ones, because the fake ones have torn up their chests and throats.
surely it is cheaper to just get a ryan air flight to Europe every other week for £25 and buy 200 ciggies than pay for them in the UK?
almost as if making cigarettes so expensive that no fucker can afford them forces people to go to a black market that will only grow. same as in australia. MAKE FAGS CHEAPER. then the problem will go away.
Tax Tax Tax that’s what this Country has become. From pensions, landfill tax for businesses at £125 per ton, car tax now electric cars etc etc etc I can go on! If you tot up all the tax you pay along with VAT on goods you buy it’s huge.. I’m not sure where the hell all this money is going!
Despite the interesting article, but… „mini marts“? Isn’t that an American term? Sorry for being pedantic but that really grated.
We can’t make everything illegal or unobtainable. Causing a vacuum like making cigs illegal would just fund the black market. If you are a smoker, you know someone or somehow to get cheaper cigs.
Instead, make it legal but apply regulation, education and taxes to it that are reasonable.
If people want to keep smoking, then at least they will contribute to the legal sale/purchase and fund taxes.
I admit I smoke socially. I can go months without a real cig. prices in the UK are sky high or they ban stuff like menthol cigs, I just go abroad and bring them in, or buy them off someone who can sell them to me (cheaper than legit cigs).
Getting people to stop smoking is good, but people need free will to an extent and will ignore the rules
But growing your own tobcco is legal… thatll be illegal like weed next 🤣
No one read the article as usual. Incredibly well written article with an accompanying video to match. This goes beyond cigarettes which i’m glad are taxed to death. i know many ex smokers who gave up the habit because it got too expensive. Regardless this article was more open criminality, lack of police resources, and inadequate legislation. And about asylum seekers, which the usual lot who comment here would have a field day over but they can’t or don’t read articles.
When a pack of ciggs is 15 pounds you are begging people to get it illegally.
