    1. tl;dr the West is behind the 2018 revolution and all of the Pashinyan’s actions ever since. There are too many western NGO’s in Armenia (as per Russian sources). Pashinyan deliberately weakened the army and ordered not to resist in the 2020 war and the 2023 ethnic cleansing as a part of West’s plan to squeeze Russia out of the region with the help of Turkey.

      tl;dr tl;dr: Nikol davachan.

      … coming from a diasporan techie guy (nuclear engineer) who is now a lecturer at the AUA.

      Occam’s razor: the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. That explanation is Armenia clearly needs strong allies, and Europe did not recognize and as a result saw Nagorno-Karabach as internationally undisputed AZ territory and would have told Armenia as much.

      From a European point of view, Armenia would have to cease NK support to become a member:

       – to entertain the idea that ethnic composition trumps currently internationally recognized borders, would mean that Russia can try to claim the Krim and eastern Ukraine and some Baltic territory, and what if Turkey decides it wants to claim some Turkish neighbourhoods in European cities?

       – it does not work in the context of a very ethnically mixed Europe. Should Germany claim Austria again and the Italian Tirol, and France and Netherlands divide Belgium? And that’s just between 5 of the original six founders of Europe. EU’s predecessor was founded in 1950 as a response to two world wars based on nationalism and the EU has always seen nationalism as the root of all evil, and from the beginning the conceptual goal has been to get people to identify as Europeans first by letting them live, work and study anywhere in Europe, after which European people would want to unify into one country. In several of the original six founding members, a majority of GenZ now says they do identify as European primarily;

       – several European countries struggled with violent ethnic separatism in recent history and don’t want a rematch;

       – it legitimizes further ethnic armed conflict in African countries, divided by European colonial powers at random in the past with borders crossing ethnic territories, with high potential for another European refugee crisis;

      – before joining the EU, a country must have reliably resolved its military conflicts because the EU has a NATO-like protective provision of mutual aid, and EU countries won’t vote unanimously to include a new country where there is a high risk of military conflict.

      Edit: and so, isn’t an evacuation preferable to a massacre? There clearly exist worse scenarios especially in the event that Armenia finds itself without allies.

      Edit 2: typo.

      I urge people to actually read the article and not the miss-characterized tldr post, because it gives off the impression that the author is some pro-russian spy who is saying hes correct because he has a PHD… People can bring reasons why they disagree with the articles hypothesis, but I can tell that not a single person who commented actually sat down and read the article thoroughly to bring up any valid critique. So read the damn thing then explain why you disagree with the authors hypothesis.
