As the technology sector faces a wave of layoffs, demand for H-1B visas, which enable U.S. companies to employ skilled foreign professionals in specialized roles, continues unabated. Microsoft, a dominant force in the industry, is reportedly set to reduce its U.S. workforce by approximately 9,000 jobs in 2025, following an earlier elimination of over [6,000 positions](https://archive.is/jezGR) in May and June 2025, primarily in Washington state. Concurrently, the company has [filed 14,181](https://archive.is/7lRal) Labor Condition Applications to secure H-1B visas for foreign workers in 2025, signaling a significant push to bring in international talent, particularly for roles like software engineering. Despite these workforce reductions, Microsoft’s financial performance remains exceptional, with a reported net income of roughly $26 billion and revenues exceeding $70 billion for the third quarter ending March 2025, driven by its leadership in cloud computing and AI. With a staggering $3.7 trillion market capitalization, according to FactSet, Microsoft stands as one of the world’s most financially formidable companies, raising questions about the balance between cost-cutting measures and global talent acquisition strategies amid ongoing economic and competitive pressures.
funny this wasn’t in the seattle times article
These are the people stealing your jobs! These are the companies who give zero shits about American workers.
One of colleges in California did that years ago. Let go of a lot tech/it and replaced them with Visa workers.
In meantime they continue to discontinue support on their products including windows 10 this fall.
Don’t need a workforce when what they really want is a mobile gaming service based model. This is sega all over. But people think naw it’ll be fine because gamepass. Well it takes 3 people and a monkey with a hamster for an assistant to run the day to day and a thousand of contract for a day workers when pushing an update once a month.
Microsoft has different sectors to it. Not like these hires are going to the places where ppl are getting let go from
There’s no conspiracy here, unfortunately, it’s just standard business practice these days.
99% of the layoffs affected Microsoft’s gaming division due to underwhelming results and poor decisions.
Right now, Microsoft’s revenue is largely driven by its cloud services, and that’s where most of the hiring is happening.
In today’s corporate environment, if one department is unprofitable, it’s rarely rescued by the revenue of another. So, layoffs in a loss-making division, even when other areas are performing well, have unfortunately become the norm.
„Historically, Jews had always thrived in nations and empires with multicultural, pluralistic and tolerant environments, while they fared badly in strong ethnic or nationalistic societies. European Jews have always been the emblematic stranger or ‘other’. Therefore, by definition, a society where the stranger is welcome is good for the Jews, although they have not always appreciated this link. The future of European Jewry is dependent on our ability to shape a multicultural, pluralistic and diverse society.“ – Göran Rosenberg, Jewish author and journalist.
