If only history had taught us that appeasing fascists doesn’t work. Where were the historians when we needed them?

Appeasement is a famously terrible strategy when dealing with fascists. Until a critical mass of people accept the crisis we are facing, we won’t have the tools to fix it.

We are going to compromise our collective safety away by letting smaller groups of people get crushed under the boot. I’m in one of those smaller groups and it honestly feels pretty hopeless.

      >Turns Out Appeasing Trump Only Emboldened Him

Gee…._Turns out_ the blindingly fucking obvious outcome that was as predictable as your dogs morning shit actually _did_ occur despite the existence of precisely zero evidence that it would not….who could have _ever_ fucking seen _that_ coming?

Yeah no shit. What’s that quote? “Evil triumphs when good people do nothing”

    5. Really good article. People need to read this because it’s clear that law in the US no longer means a thing.

Freedom and democracy requires strength to defend it. And every institution that could have done what needed to be done to stop the rise of a dictatorship just didn’t have the needed strength.

So it falls to people now to do it. The Mussolini example is particularly apropo.

    6. Up until everyone ignores him. Strangely, the only way to control him is to ignore everything he says and does. Psychology of a Malignant Narcissist 101.

    7. I would like to believe that the United States “needs” to go through this period to come out hopefully better.

Oh If only we ever had a historical example of a fascist being appeased and it leading to bad things. We would surely notice the signs and not let it happen!

    9. Surely after allowing Germany, to absorp Austria to prevent a war, annex the Sudetenland to prevent the war, and occupy the „rump Czechoslovakia“ to prevent a war the risk of war is gone forever. Peace lasted… checks, notes… less than half a year.

    10. This is how appeasement always works, especially with people obsessed with power (ie almost everyone throughout history where appeasement as a strategy needed to be considered).

Yeah, I learned this when my toddler started using tantrums to get what she wanted.
