Fascism. It’s fascism.

Speaking on the House floor, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) tore into his colleagues on the other side of the aisle, frustrated with their apparent willingness to shepherd a version of President Donald Trump’s so-called Big Beautiful Bill into law.
“I say to my Republican colleagues: What’s wrong with you people?” McGovern said Wednesday during a period of debate on the massive piece of legislation.
“In this bill, you provide a $2 billion tax break for gun silencers, but you cut SNAP benefits for vulnerable families, which, by the way, is on average $2 per person, per meal,” McGovern went on, raising his arms for emphasis.

They didn’t think this when they saw the GOP unite behind the Southern Strategy, Newt Gingrich, Islamophobia, the Tea Party, Birtherism, etc?
For a party that railed and booed over the the Biden assertion that the GOP had no issue cutting Social Security, they sure turned on a dime.
What’s right with them?

In short? Because US demographics and reality are against them and if they don’t seize power now their political party will slowly dissolve which would harm their wealthy benefactors.

All that effort is differentiate ‚MAGA Republicans‘ from ‚Republicans‘ was completely wasted, as many people said it would be.

I am bewildered by this myself. It attacks everything from science to education and on top of that attacks those in poverty because somehow Republicans believe poor people and knowledge is destroying this country. What? Do Republicans understand the reason for USAID, USDA, FEMA, DOE, DOL?
I’m proud to say Jim McGovern is my representative! He’s a genuinely great human being…which is why he is baffled by modern-day Republicans.
What’s wrong with them? The list is endless. But they are very bad people who don’t care about their constituents or their country. They care about getting re-elected and making as much money as possible while in office.

What’s wrong them them is corruption. They are owned by billionaires who are in an unholy alliance with theocratic partners, carving up this country and selling it to the super wealthy by means of a well-funded disinformation ecosystem. It is completely reasonable for people with no morals and no empathy to be beholden only to self enrichment at any cost. What’s crazy is electing these people as societal representatives.
Random idea: how do we feel about having Senators and Representatives literally sign the bills they endorse — for the sake of accountability? Having their name on it seems like a simple but effective way to get them to actually scrutinize it.
It seems quite simple. If you look down on the poor and the vulnerable, but you still want to feel good about yourself, you have to imagine that those people deserve everything they get. When your ideology rejects anything that could possibly lead to growth or progress, then everything becomes a zero sum game. The only way you can win is by making someone else lose.
People who question their own moral positions will alter their choices and opinions to become better people making moral choices. People who don’t want to change but also want to feel good about that will simply construct narratives that justify what they wanted to do anyway. When faced with the consequences of their choices on other people they might feel uncomfortable, but that will not lead them to alter their behaviour. Instead, they will grow to hate their victims, despise their weakness, blame them for being victimized and reject empathy, so they can (again) suppress those feelings, not change and carry on as before.
They will truly believe the stories they construct to justify their behaviour, but do so in bad faith. They are well aware that their perception of their own morality is tied to that belief, which is why they will see anything that undermines it (including reality) as a personal attack. This is what motivates the anti-intellectualism, the hatred for „do-gooders“ and the relentless campaign to put an end to science and fact based understanding of reality, all of whom are existential threats to their peace of mind. You’d think that dogmatic belief in your own moral superiority would be restful, but the reality is that it implies an endless battle against everyone and everything and boundless suspicion and fear of those who are different because the very existence of the out-group represents a continuous denial of that belief.
Fundamentally, it’s just intellectual as well as moral laziness that morphs into malice and then violence when confronted. It’s not just people refusing to think, but also people refusing to empathize. The political expression is usually various reactionary or fascist movements, sometimes in the open, sometimes under the guise of „conservatism“ or religion. The provisions of this law are designed to hurt people they have „othered“ in this way.

The dollar is currently the weakest it’s been, against other currencies, since the 70s. Bond yields rising as well.
