Letting Trump get an easy win is basically the how to play Trump playbook.
I don’t know why anyone should care about what this admin says. They will say anything at any moment that is self serving or to craft whatever narrative they want. It doesn’t matter if it’s true or if they said something different 5 seconds ago. They will insult and praise Canada whenever it suits them to make themselves feel better.
Unfortunately part of negotiating with this admin is making trump feel like a big strong man and appeasing his ego. Did carney “cave” or was this planned theatrics that he and trump discussed ahead of time? We’ve been pausing this tax for years, why suddenly enact and retract it now? Everything about this US admin is a show.
In all honesty if this White House is saying that Carney caved then I can only assume he exchanged the DST for something immeasurably more valuable.
This is such an own goal for us. If we weren’t prepared to see it through, why go ahead with the tax in the first place. If the people around the PM didn’t foresee how this was going to play out, our PM is very poorly surrounded. Or maybe they did and he ignored them. Which is equally worrying. So frustrating. We need to do better.

Wish I could interpret this as part of a great chess move on Carney’s part, but it doesn’t come off that way.
We cannot diversify trade faster. I hope Carney follows whatever bitter pill we have to swallow with the US up with another deal elsewhere.
Reality show nonsense. Most likely scenario is Carney had already agreed to drop the DST and used that information to lie and spill the beans for his reality show. No point Carney saying so. It would just excite the MAGA faithful
Cool, let them say whatever the fuck they want, as long as we’re getting the best possible deal (like Freeland and her team did last time, hence Trump’s deep personal animus towards her).
And for the record, I believe the DST is/was good policy, and was all for the “retribution” the the tech firms were already doling out (oh no, no “news” sharing function on Facebook in Canada, god forbid)…but obviously have no idea what’s going on with the larger negotiations package, and if the DST is viewed by those in the know as the most viable sacrificial lamb so be it.
Similar objectives can be achieved through other means, and Goebbels Barbie can spin it as some grand victory.
The fact they think this is something to brag about says all you need to know about America. Our number one priority has to be diversifying trade partners. Shouldn’t even be a partisan issue it should be seen as completely necessary to protect our sovereignty which should be above politics.
I am counting down the days until I see the last of Karoline Leavitt. Isn’t it tradition for WH press secretaries to leave after a two year stint? I hope that she follows suit – sooner would be better.
Boy oh boy I’m sure upset that we lost! Now we’re going to have to go back to the old deal we had before all of this nonsense.

Yup, that’s exactly what we did. What we’ve done every step of the way. He says jump, we ask how high. He makes more demands and we get nothing in return. And for what? To maybe make some other agreement he’ll just ignore when he wants to? We ALREADY have a trade deal, that was renegotiated AT TRUMP’S INSISTANCE.
Trudeau could at least put on a show of patriotism and standing up against the chud menace on both sides of the border. Carney is the globalist bankers‘ globalist banker and barely can conceive of „Canada“ as a sovereign (lol) country rather than a collection of moneyed interests and people who wish they were Yanks. In a way, it’s a bit more honest.
