She is awesome for the heavily online group, can she bring in the more moderate dems? I would say no at the moment. NYC is a very different tent than trying to win over dems across the nation.
Strong Dissagree. New York is a lot more progressive that a lot of the country and AOC is too far left to bring more centrists to her side. I have nothing against her, and would vote for her if my choice was between her and anyone MAGA related, but we need someone more in the middle to run against the MAGAts that are going to keep running.
We’ve had run two extremely qualified women for president and both times the American public (or at least the electoral college) said that they’d rather have a literal pedophile be president than vote for a woman.

I think AOC won’t be effective as president right now. Why not take over one state, any state first? Try out our policies and bring them national? We don’t have enough progressive reps either to help support AOC in Congress. In terms of being a good executive, I think she would be great, but people won’t be happy if she can’t get wide sweeping legislation passed.

If Donald Trump faces AOC (running for a 3rd term), then SCOTUS and congress and read states aren’t even pretending anymore to be a check on the executive. At that point we have a king and it doesn’t matter who the Dems put up as a challenger.

AOC polls pretty poorly outside liberal circles and has been demonized by the right for a decade. If you thought Clinton’s constant demonization by the right was bad AoC’s puts it to shame. She won’t get past the primary, but she 100% loses in the general even if she did.
Salon is playing to Redditors in a bubble. AOC herself would tell you she’d get nailed in the general with the current political landscape. If the MAGAts actually lose she’ll have far better prospects in 2036.

I might get downvoted for this but fuck it. AOC is a fantastically intelligent and capable person that I think would do well in the office, however, the US has demonstrated time and time again (especially recently) that they’ll choose literally any other option than a woman. If we want a woman president we first have to defeat the cancer our country is infested with.

Pleading with democrats to possess a tiny bit of tactical awareness or strategy this election. People don’t seem to understand that the cost of losing is much worse than the cost of winning with a slightly less idealistic candidate.
Please consider winning and the candidate that will actually obtain independent voters over idealistic identity politicians who make you feel good.
The last two candidates are what lost those elections. 2016 was by barely more than 80,000 votes combined in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. 2024 was about 250,000 total votes in the same three states.

I hate to say this but I disagree. I want AOC to become long term leadership in congress. If she becomes president we only get her for 4-8 years. If she sticks around in congress she can have influence for a longer time.

Republicans didn’t get here overnight, controlling every branch of our government and packing the supreme court took decades. A single 4-8 year term won’t begin to solve our country’s problems. Democrats have been floundering because they don’t have the ground game, they currently don’t even have a coherent strategy or message. We need to put in the time, and we can’t make the same mistake of getting complacent like in 2020 thinking that Donald Trump losing is enough. He’s a symptom of our larger problems, ramming through the path Mitch McConnel and the GOP laid out for a Republican majority and largely unchallenged by a Democratic old guard that has been the worst people we could have had in this moment and who refuse to step aside.

We shouldn’t allow Trumpian fear dictate who we run. AOC is not the best candidate. She’s good at messaging, she’s likable, she’s progressive, she has solid values. She also has little to run on. She’s passed no major legislation, she’s had no Senate or executive experience, and more importantly, she has time. We have a talented field of Democrats for 2028 that have more substantive accomplishments while AOC can up her legislative chops and be a compelling candidate in ’36, when she’ll still be just 47.
The idea of rushing her into a candidacy because Trump rails at her undermines our agency as a party to examine the full field and determine who is best for us. It’s a similar issue we’ve run into since Obama, where the party establishment makes a unilateral decision on who they believe is best. We should have a robust and competitive primary without significant interference from leadership, and try to remove our preconceived biases and evaluate people based on their electoral track record and policy accomplishments. AOC has the former, we need to give her more time to achieve the latter.
First off, the press needs to stop with normalizing the notion that Trump can run for a third term. That shit needs to shot down as far and wide as often as possible. Treat it like when they were all in on stories about Biden’s age, write 3 op-eds a day about it.
Second, while I like AOC, she needs to win in places beyond NY and CA. And as shitty as it sounds, we definitely learned in the last couple election cycles that there are still large swaths of people that clearly do not want to vote for a woman president.
