Don’t. Please don’t. Don’t cave in. You are only encouraging the toddler to continue with his tantrums.

And by removing this tax, you are putting money back in the hands of those who use it to empower him.

Are we still doing Elbows Up? In all seriousness poking the bear with this tax in the first place was the wrong move, but folding so quickly also will likely increase Trumps demands on us.

Well that is disappointing. Carney folded like a wet paper towel considering the deficit we have with US in digital services.

Elbows up Carney! If Trump wasnt in power, Carney wouldn’t have had a platform. He leveraged it to get in power and had no intention of following through. Thanks for voting liberal again canada!

I don’t like this tax. It’s me paying more for things I already consume. It’s not taking money out of American corporate pockets, it’s taking money out of my pocket.

But fuck this. You gotta make them negotiate it away.

So first of all, the digital service tax was never going to be a line in the sand for this government. It’s important yes but not nearly enough to jeopardize a trade agreement with the US.

Having said that, the timeline is so confusing to me. Trump may be a blithering idiot but I’d have to think his team at least mentioned it on the G7. So either Carney agreed and Trump did this just so he could show off his temper tantrum to his base, or Carney did a 180 after seeing the temper tantrum. What’s sad is that the former seems most likely.

    7. Right before Canada Day, literally hours before DJT went on a rant saying he had all the cards and could cripple our economy, we decide to instantly fold. This basically gives DJT all the ammo to mold the trade agreements however he likes. Literally repeated 51st state and rationale, and said US farmers are getting ripped off, this is going to force so many industries to die in Canada.

People are gonna be snarky with ‚elbows‘ comments about this, but it was obviously going to happen lol

Why would we sacrifice EVERY Canadian industry in a trade war with Trump just to keep this garbage rent-seeking mess in the DST…?

I feel like Canadians are getting a little delusional about trade because of TDS –> **free-trade is a TWO-WAY street**, and everyone knows that the DST was basically a synthetic tariff on American services. American tech and services are literally their main economic engine, the largest market cap companies in the world, and even employ CANADIANS paying way above average salaries in Canada — whereas most Canadian service companies won’t even match 1/2 their American counter-parts in salaries even within Canada.

Even the democrats under Biden were mad about this rent-seeking garbage from Trudeau

Glad everything Carney has done so far has been pragmatic and not egotistical to satisfy some cringy progressive agenda (*cough cough*, former nepo-baby PM)

    9. Carney keeps capitulating and selling Canada out to Trumps every demand.
Military, Trade, Borders, you name it Carney seems hellbent on doing whatever it takes to pretend it’s business as usual.
We’ve committed to massive military spending, and even haven’t ruled out paying for an insanely overpriced missile defense system.
We’ve dropped almost all retaliatory efforts in trade and the governments narrative has been almost solely on restoring partnerships with the U.S., despite them not having made any real concessions to us. What happened to „the relationship is irreparably harmed“ and focusing on other trade partners?
We have Canadians phones and laptops being searched, detained unjustly, *A Canadian Died in ICE Custody* and the U.S. is withholding information on it, and the travel advisory for the U.S. is „Normal Security Precautions“, and the government maintains the safe 3rd country agreement.
What happened to Elbows Up? It feels more like our elbows are down in the dirt on our knees, fingers clasped, begging to continue an abusive relationship.

EDIT: Just saw that Trump, immediately after getting what he wanted with the digital services tax, is demanding more concessions in regard to our supply management protections. It will never end. This is not negotiating, this is handing the aggressor everything they want, and the more this bullying tactic works, the more they’ll employ it. This kind of behaviour is what Smith got lambasted for earlier, and rightfully so.

    10. Carney needs the tariffs gone (or down to 10%). It’s more important now that he get a deal that eliminates or lowers the tariffs and prevents broader layoffs and recession. Elbows up was a campaign narrative. Now he’s governing, and that’s a different battle. Trump is transactional, not strategic. The reality is we *need* to get a US trade deal, and given Trump’s nature we will need to give up something to get it. Meanwhile Carney is trying to lay the foundation for deeper, closer partnerships with other countries to deleverage our dependence on the US. That’s the strategy. We can’t win by fighting Trump.

Not sure what the play is for rescinding, but you can’t tell if it’s worth keeping or losing it until we see what if the US is willing to negotiate in good faith without it.

If as seems likely, the US isn’t really going to bargain and will just keep demanding more and more concessions, I guess we’ll see at that point if we have anything to lose by imposing the DST.

Let’s build Canadian online services. Apparently some Canadians are building a Facebook-like service on the AT protocol called Gander Social. That’s what we need.
