After Lost in Translation, Johansson was offered a string of generic rom-coms such as He’s Just Not That Into You — films where only sex appeal was required and which the actress has described as “deeply unfulfilling”.
“You know, it’s a different time for young women,” Johansson says. “The messaging is different — there are many more role models, women are visible in powerful positions and the opportunities I have had to play women who don’t have to just be one thing or another have increased.”
Were films such as Jonathan Glazer’s trippy, nasty Under the Skin and, indeed, Her, in which she never appears on screen, a kind of rebellion against those cookie-cutter Hollywood roles? “You know, I just waited,” she says.
“So my responsibility then was just to be productive,” she continues, “trying to maintain the momentum of my career and wait for things that felt right. And that is hard because there is an existential angst that comes with waiting, but I had to allow space for the creative process to do its thing. It was nerve-racking. I’m in a business where you feel like, at any moment, you’ll become irrelevant. But I think it pays off — I know it does”
Mine hasn’t shifted
It’s still 90% one type of woman. The messaging just talks out of both sides of the mouth now.
Things haven’t advanced that much and there is less money and opportunities on the table for everybody and even less for the women who aren’t that type.
But she accepted this. People forget Scarlett used to be a Tomboy. You look at her in Ghost World and she looked completely different from the whole sex blonde bombshell she embraced later on.
I love the interview I think from the Avengers press tour where she calls out always getting the “what’s it like getting in that tight suit? What’s your diet like? Etc”
It’s true, they always focus on her looks.

Actors are going the way of the dodo bird with AI. It will be interesting if they become the new local book store where there’s a push for localized business/media. Pay will be different but then you’ll have this world of AI entertainment and local theater being the new thing.
Can I still desire her?
But she very willingly accepted roles that glorified her butt more than her acting. So don’t complain now when your money making butt is sagging.
This woman is amazing.
Shit is not that deep. Hollywood is so full of smugness.
