    1. Thank you.

These politically correct snowflakes need to focus less on word policing and more on reducing the cost of living.

It seems this country will never get over its mainstream Islamophobia.

    3. anyone ever seen the documentary israelism? good documentary to show how nationalistic indoctrination happens, even for a different country.

if you believe that one people gaining agency or power over their oppressors is dangerous, then you might be the oppressor.

Straightforward, direct, answers questions with reference to wider policies rather than divisive single-topic areas, and not afraid to call out underhanded ad-hominem attacks and politicking.

I’m so happy for you America, you deserve representation from a guy like this.

    5. There’s potential for an embarrassing trap to be set here.

This soundbite has given license for a Cuomo or an Adams to intentionally promote some populist but incendiary idea to coax Mamdani into condemning it then play back this comment about not policing speech.

It’d communicate that he’s only interested in policing *some kinds of speech* and could spook swing constituencies.

I don’t want to hear any of these horrible reporters’ leading questions, when they all go day in and day out letting Zionist after Zionist off the hook for supporting actual ethnic cleansing happening right now. The racism is so astoundingly transparent at this point.

    7. Scarlettail on

Fine, as long as he’s consistent and applies the same logic across the board. If he condemns any other language or phrasing later which he might think is hateful, then he’ll seem hypocritical right away.

Why do we demand Muslims apologize for other Muslims before we let them speak on anything? These sorts of questions are rarely asked of other religions.

    9. WastelandOutlaw007 on

So, he openly stated he doesn’t think a call by the Islamic extremists for global genocide, should be condemned by politicians

Ffs its going to suck when NY gets a republican mayor.

    10. Then I’m sure he’d have no problem with people saying things to incite violence against Muslims

    11. Uniiiverse0 on

It’s important to note that Mamdani himself has not even used the phrase, he has not expressed interest in using the phrase. But because he does not want to unilaterally condemn the phrase, you have Democratic leaders and representatives saying his views „against Jewish people“ are concerning.

This is despite his overwhelming jewish outreach, despite the fact that he has a a large jewish voter base, despite the fact that he was cross endorsed by Brad Lander who believes in his fight against antisemitism. It is an illogical position in which Dems are finding themselves aligned with Republicans on and they need to get their act together, fast.

I really wish leftists weren’t so weird when it comes to Palestine

It’s not a defensible phrase and you need to stop pretending it is

He’s correct that mayor’s shouldn’t police speech. The rest is just journalists trying to trip him up, and him not engaging with their games. Zohran is a breath of fresh air.

    14. The vote blue no matter who crowd is awfully quick to attack the blue candidate

    15. Policing speech of a mayoral candidate when the president is undeniably a Nazi

    16. reddititty69 on

Condemning this phrase isn’t the same as policing it. I support him not letting ratfuckers put words in his mouth, but this is a spineless line of defense.

    17. What’s the point of this frame?

There’s absolutely nothing good that comes to anybody except the killers in the profiteers from framing the New York mayoral election this way

    18. PropofolMargarita on

MAGA candidate: Kill all the blacks and the Arabs too!

Zohran: As mayor I won’t police this speech

    19. Mayors also don’t have the authority to arrest world leaders in order to try to enforce international law, but that didn’t stop him from saying he’s going to arrest Bibi. I wonder what these statements both have in common?

    20. Inspiredrationalism on

Funny if i popularize “ start another holy war against arabs” i think Mamdani would rightfully police it.

Pretending to not know what people actually mean with the term “ globalize the intifada “ is such gaslighting.

We say what it meant in DC, and Miami.

Also leftwing democrats claiming the don’t want to police speech is beyond hypocritical. Honestly it would be hilarious if I wasn’t so sad.

    21. CynicalOptimistSF on

I think Mamdani did a good job distancing himself from the use of that phrase. I would have liked for him to outright condemn it, but I understand why he chose not to. If he had condemned it, he would have immediately been labeled a „Zionist“ by certain extreme factions on the left.

    22. pillbox_purgatory on

Zohran is looking like the template democrats should follow.

His statement against policing speech is as much as a direct attack against Trump and his cronies punishing folks for expressing anything anti-Israel, as much as it is an attack condemning the Left for its own policing of speech surrounding topics of race and gender.

All speech control is bad. This sub needs to learn this lesson.

    23. Known_Week_158 on

He wasn’t asked to ban it or anything like that, just to criticise it.

He is trying to dodge around his lack of willingness to oppose covert calls for violence.

    24. ShareGlittering1502 on

If they’re asking him to condemn things, they should ask him to condemn white Christian nationalists assassinating politicians too

    25. hotnewroommate on

Ugh depending on the phrase, yes they should.

Would he have the same response to Mein Kampf?

I’m sure there is another word in Arabic that is a synonym for uprising but they won’t use it because they want it to mean exactly what they are saying

    26. bad_pussy_69 on

Cmon. He totally dodged the question. He can reject the phrase without violating New Yorkers 1A rights.
