How do you spend £9m and go £3m over budget on a door?
It’s quite a nice door, and needs to be a secure door, but it’s still ultimately a door?

I was expecting something a bit more trivial from the Lords—like complaints about the decor, but this feels like a pretty valid complaint.
Anyone found a breakdown of the £9.6m? I guess it is not just for a door.
In these times of financial hardship for so many people in this country, to spend almost 10 million quid on a new door is frankly immoral. What the fuck is up with these people?
I wonder if the contractor happened to be a friend or donor to the tories. It seems every business that gets a government contract immediately drags it out and charges a ridiculous amount for it.
By my math you could have made a door of solid gold 6.5cm thick for that price.
I’m sure the contractors worked really hard and the work was well organised and the spec really well written.
This makes no sense. Surely, this cost is one hell of a lot more than a door. If it is, this is outrageous!
So people can afford there heating bills, Electric bills and council tax bill but they get 10 million for a door!!!

I’m all for spending on quality for something to last long past my life time.
Although this ammount is ludicrous.
I’d like to see a breakdown of the cost of the door vs the cost of admin/operayions etc which I suspect makes up most of the cost.
The HoL is a Grade I listed building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So any new door must be made of the same material and in a similar way to the existing door.

I initially thought this cost was utterly impossible, so started to look around for comparators and to be fair a project to make some parts of Durham cathedral wheel chair accessible cost £12m and it’s probably far better maintained than Parliament. According to historic England it’s because as soon as you start poking around you have to fix a load of structural issues that were out of sight out of mind.
Stone masons just must cost an absolute fucking bomb is the conclusion!
Can we spend the renovation budget building 4 state of the art new buildings in each of the 4 capital cities, then rotate parliament around. Include bedsits and canteen.

It’s what happens when the utter fuckwits that use the building won’t use one of a thousand other buildings somewhere else while the work is done.
It adds enormous cost and time to the work which is a complete waste of public funds.
Somebody ought to take them to task over it.
It’s a pittance for the door, a boat load of the money for the building around the door and a boat load more for the door to remain in service when it shouldn’t be.
