I think he means “I’ve told him to give up on Mars.”
Everyone with a brain knew he was never going to get us to Mars.
No one has made me less excited to put humans on Mars than Musk.
Fitting, considering Earth has given up on him.
We have no real reason to get to Mars right now. It’s too expensive and has no actual pay-off.

if there is any massive space project worth doing it is designing freight ships to reach the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, retrieve asteroids with potentially trillions in rare minerals, and tow them back somehow near Earth to process

I reckon he’s now pivoted to being „we need to transfer our knowledge into robots so that they can survive for longer than humans and let the AI solve all this“.
The fundamental problem to that is power availability, and, except for batteries, he failed to keep going to sort that out.
All of these people are degenerate liars. They are not telling you what they actually think.
He used Mars as a way to get the best talent at SpaceX and to motivate them to work hard and make him rich and powerful. He also used climate change/renewables to motivate his Tesla employees, before also giving up on that once he’d made his nut.
I really hate that our society is so fucked up that people like Musk and Trump can reap huge rewards by being shameless pathological liars. It does not bode well for the future.
Good? It’s delusional. Its easier to colonize the Sahara desert or Antarctica or the bottom of the ocean than Mars.

Ok here’s what I don’t understand:
These tech bros are all in on AI and robots. Why are they trying to send humans to Mars? Doesn’t the bulk of the expense and engineering challenge involve sending a bunch of meat bags and keeping them alive, healthy, and sane? So why don’t they just send robots and let them build bases and terraform and what not and make Mars somewhat livable for the humans who will eventually get there. That is, if the goal is to create an escape pod for humanity

That’s because Musk was never really serious to begin with. Oh, he may have thought it was a neat idea and might have been coked up enough to go “Yeah, let’s do it! Let’s go to Mars!” but there was never any real follow through. Colonizing Mars is a vast undertaking and would need much more extensive research and prep than anything Space X has shown itself interested in doing.
People don’t grasp just how difficult going to mars is. With starship you need to solve technical and structural errors, have the engines be able to produce enough thrust to meet its claim capabilities, solve in orbit fuel transfers, make production significantly faster, make launch cadence significantly greater, make starship human rated, make starship have an independent power source because solar panels cannot power all of the ship, pack enough food and supplies within it for the journey there, send thousands of tons of material to mars before humans so that they don’t die on the planet, once on the planet you’d need to also already have an independent power source because solar panels still won’t cut it, would need independent systems because latency speeds are non existent, somehow keep humans entertained and not want to kill each other, then send them back to earth.
Being able to “send” someone to mars isn’t difficult, that was already possible decades ago. Sending them to mars alive then having them live on mars for 2 years then launch them back is somehow we are simply nowhere close to.
I’d be surprised if we could send a human to mars alive, have them live on mars (whilst still being alive) then have them sent back to earth (whilst still being alive) by 2050
