In a move that threatens to spark chaos throughout the country, the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday partially blocked a series of nationwide injunctions on President Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order.
The ruling was 6-3 and with fierce dissent from Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
“No right is safe in the new legal regime the Court creates. Today the threat is to birthright citizenship. Tomorrow a different administration may try to seize firearms from law-abiding citizens or prevent people of certain faiths from gathering to worship,” Sotomayor wrote, adding that “with the stroke of a pen, the President has made a solemn mockery of our Constitution.”

He won on injunctions, which is procedural. They haven’t gone to trial on the merits of birthright citizenship yet. Most scholars agree Trump will lose here
This will cause fucking chaos, this court will go down in history for all of the wrong reasons
Amazing. Pathetic, but predictable! The Supreme Court can’t be counted upon to defend the Constitution or the rule of law. It is beginning to look like a subsidiary of the Trump Organization!
SCOTUS is compromised. No there way to put it. Birthright is clear in the constitution and requires an amendment to change. There should not be any hearings at all. This is not ambiguous. SCOTUS is just making things up now
This court has lost all legitimacy. They asked the question during of what happens to someone born in CA but then travels to Florida for vacation? The nationwide injunction are overkilled now because congress is gladly pushing their responsibilities to the president. The injunctions are needed because there’s a real risk of harm to the person. If someone born in Kansas can just be deported immediately and then have to sue from another country, that is sooooo onerous to them and definitely not right considering birthright citizenship has been upheld for centuries.

The thing that bothers me about the Court isn’t so much that they almost always rule against my side, it’s that their logic is often tortured and inconsistent.
I understand a court can’t be devoid of bias, but sticking to solid logic and a certain method of analysis goes a long way to alleviate that influence. But the Roberts court just makes up its mind almost willy nilly and doesn’t bother to make any of it make sense.

Amazing how conservatives will go to any length to harm any non white straight christian male. Like the morons obviously want a civil war to break out with what they are pushing. Honestly the confederates got off too damn easy with their treason during the last one and now they have the power. Watch them start coming for us puerto ricans and others born on US territories that are citizens by birthright citizenship.
Once Republicans are out of power, something needs to be done about this Supreme Court because it’s clear that they are playing fast and loose with the Constitution.

Technically lower courts don’t have to follow this ruling as the Supreme Court doesn’t actually enforce anything. However, I doubt this ruling is ignored by them as much as I would like it to be.
If they can remove citizenship for those that are currently citizens, then nobody is truly a citizen.
Pretty sure they will change their mind the minute the GOP loses the Presidency.

What other rights will be summarily stripped by a president with criminal immunity who can’t be stopped from illegal actions by judicial injunctions?
How come a president forgiving a portion of student loan debt is a „major question“ that courts must stop, but a president literally putting the constitution into a wood chipper is something courts are powerless to stop?
At this point you might as well just disband congress, the constitution is being dismantled by executive orders and corrupt judges.

So federal court opinions only apply to specific individuals now? Wtf is happening in this country
If the Supreme Court can’t make the right call on something that is guaranteed word for word in the constitution then they clearly do not deserve the power to be interpreting the constitution.
So, if the President can issue an Executive Order to contradict the Constitution, and judges don’t have any power to declare it illegal or unconstitutional, then the Constitution has no meaning and the President can arbitrarily issue superseding EOs.
Understatement, but this is really bad.
So if I’m following: if president issue an execute order that guns are no longer allowed, all guns are illegal, every single affected plaintiff has to go to court INDIVIDUALLY and get an injunction or otherwise their guns will be illegal and they’ll have no recourse until the actual constitutionality of the executive order gets heard and decided on by the Supreme Court a year+ later if at all. And that somehow makes sense to them as how the process should work, these „very serious people“ who are supposed to be the top legal minds in the country.
Meanwhile Barrett is crying about how at least 23 universal injunctions had been issued in Trump’s first hundred days as a problem with THE LEGAL SYSTEM and not a problem with HIS MANY FLAGRANTLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL EXECUTIVE ORDERS.
We’re cooked. Supreme Court is in the tank for tyranny, just fully giving up the role of the court in checking the power of the executive branch. Fuck all of these absolute monsters.
There are 94 U.S. District Courts in the U.S. and Territories. The impact of this ruling is the following:
An Administration makes a patently unConstitutional Executive Order (for instance, ignoring the exlicit language of an Amendment).
Any citizen impacted by this order may sue the Administration in their District Court.
Here’s the good part: if the District Court rules in the plaintiff’s favor then the plaintiff is given relief via an injunction that covers that District. The plaintiff’s path in the Judicial System has been closed off. They can’t appeal a decision in their favor to the Supreme Court. So, the net result is that for Constitutional questions that unequivocally and inarguably should apply to all citizens in every State it will only happen if one of the following happens:
– Some idiot judge somewhere ignores the Constitution and rules against the plaintiff allowing the plaintiff to appeal
OR
– All 94 District Courts rule in their individual plaintiff’s favor
There is simply no fucking way this decision can be defended. It is patently absurd.
Y’all are so cooked with this Supreme Court, I’d even go so far as to say it’s wiser for some of y’all to just get out of the US while you can.
