They’d been preparing for *weeks* to spend the next few months to drag Cuomo over the coals over why he resigned as governor. Now so that „work“ has gone to waste, meaning their RoI will be zero on everything they’d already prepared.

It kind of reminds me of when Kamala picked Tim Walz over Josh Shapiro. Shapiro was the „obvious“ choice. He was the „safe“ choice. So the plan makers got to plannin for Shapiro. Mamdani seemed like such an obvious unserious candidate (which would make sense if we were still in 2024) but is in fact running on the same platform as Trump did. They cant really attack his policies without having to defend Trump’s, they cant use their Cuomo plans they likely spent plenty of time and money on, and now all thats left on the surface level (which is as far as they go) is „brown=unamerican“.
You can tell when Trump is scared of someone. He goes off on them. The lesser known the name the more important it is that he is trying to attack them in that moment. Forget the bullet, De Santis gave him the fear of God. He crushed that „We have Donald Trump at home“ knockoff but Bernie, AOC, and now Mamdani? The man is sweating…
Republicans call everyone a socialist communist, so it means nothing when they screech it some more. It’s honestly desensitized people to the words.
Remember that conspiratorial worldviews are an inversion of logic and morality. They don’t believe their own arguments because they make sense; they believe them because they justify what they want to do anyway.
The rhetoric and the conspiracy theories becoming more unhinged simply means them wanting to justify ever more extreme actions. The insane rhetoric is a direct consequence rather than a cause of their increasing authoritarianism and acceptance of violence (state sponsored or private) .

What are they worried about? I thought their policies were popular? Especially considering they recently won the presidency and majority of congress.
They have no reason to care about one mayor unless maybe they’re worried they might not be able to win elections against popular people like him because the numbers are too high for anyone to change a few to win?
Maybe we need to take a closer look at the last Presidential election like they did in 2020 just so we know for sure that republicans are as popular as recent elections say they are.
May be self aware enough to realize, much as the Obama presidency fueled a shift within the GOP away from the status quo and toward more extremes, Trump may do the same for the opposition.

But Mamdani was able to mobilize a lot of people to support him in.a short period of time, he has potential to trigger a grass roots movement like Bernie Sanders did and Republicans don’t like it when someone comes along and reminds people they truly have the power to upset the establishment, to beat the billionaires.
This is what happens when 1/2 of the political spectrum spends 20 years declaring every policy they don’t like to be communist, with no regard to whether that’s a true accusation or not.
Eventually, a politician is gonna show up who is talking about the policies you have spent 20 years demonizing, where that demonization only works for the people that are already on your side of the aisle, others are gonna say let’s at least try it.

The GOP’s policies for my entire life have been tax cuts for the corporations, increased privatization of education, healthcare, public land, anti-union and pro military intervention.
Despite their attempt at a populist rebrand via MAGA their policies have not changed materially.
They are not moving to where the people are at, they are trying to move the people to where they are at.
The current conservative movement is not, at its core, a rebellion against the establishment it is the establishment. It’s a defense of the neoliberal order dressed in populist rhetoric. Mamdani’s victory even if it’s just a primary marks a turning point. That world is dead.
