He is well known but Finnish culture doesn’t really revolve around heroics. Many veterans never talked about their experiences on the front either.

Never heard, who’s that? Seriously, he’s not that big thing here, we have lot of heroes and lot of sad stories. Interesting man, yes, but he did not win the war alone (and as you know, we didn’t, but fought back and stayed independent).

    3. His name occasionally comes up in discussions on the aggressor’s aggressions but yeah, I also feel like Simo Häyhä has more of a „fanbase“ outside of Finland.

Go to sauna with a group of middle aged engineers and you will hear all about him.

    5. People just aren’t that into military history here. It’s a fact of life and his story and that of the whole war is more sad than cool or epic. We are not keen on the hero worship that comes from quite a few foreign people regarding these things.

Relatively popular but not known by nearly everybody. The only war hero known by basically everyone is Mannerheim.

    7. Might as well ask if the sky is blue.

As for the reason why we don’t about our venerated people, war is hell for everyone. Their accomplishments aren’t ours to claim. Let the dead rest.

He is very well known. You may not have heard of him because Finland does not really have the same „hero culture“ as many other countries have. Especially with the winter war, more emphasis is put on the „Finnish spirit“ and people instead of individual heroes.
