A progressive win in a deep blue major city is not necessarily earth-shattering. NYC politics don’t necessarily reflect the US electorate. I’m happy for his win though. Cuomo should retire.

One of my professors was a reporter for US News and World Report. Her main gripe was that candidates for office do it for fame or stardom, not to serve their constituents. She said this was caused by the removal of civics from school curriculum. I agree with that assessment, especially since congressmen are often re-elected solely because they’re the incumbent.

Mamdani showed the ability to win over voters. Hopefully he will be able to enact real change, and that example should guide others to try to do the same.

Yikes, this makes it sound like the win was due to the party being corrupt and weak and not about any strengths of Mamdani because well, anyone could have beat such a weak establishment. I’d rather a socialist defeat a strong establishment because then it means the socialist is stronger.

I’m from western Queens, I ranked Mamdani first and didn’t rank Cuomo, and I’m really excited that he won a decisive primary victory. But all of these think pieces about the national implications of this election are frustrating as hell to read. Mamdani won for the same reason AOC won when she primaried Joe Crowley. They both cultivated a very enthusiastic base of volunteers who hit the streets and talked directly to people about why they liked them. That’s it. His campaign reminded me so much of hers years ago. His people seemed to be everywhere, they came by my apartment three times, and bodega and small restaurant owners had his campaign posters in their windows like, everywhere. Brad Lander is arguably just as progressive of a candidate (and he and Mamdani actually cross-endorsed), but I never ran across a volunteer for his campaign.

Do I think a run of the mill establishment Democrat could generate similar enthusiasm and build a similar volunteer operation? No. I do not. Do I think the DNC, the GOP, and the national media are going to look into this specific, local election and completely misread why and how he won? Yes. I do. The DNC needs to start understanding how to build local networks of people who are enthusiastic about their ideas, and that starts with local issues.

EDIT: And now even *New York* magazine has a headline that „Zohran Mamdani Just Remade American Politics.“ This has to be by someone who never leaves Manhattan unless it’s to go to Williamsburg.

I’m glad he won, but it’s a bit unsettling that his margin wasn’t larger over a former Governor who resigned because of sexual harassment. Why did so many people vote for Cuomo? If they wanted a more centrist alternative to Mamdani who isn’t a complete piece of shit, they could have voted for Lerner. Yet he was a really distant third.

I find this fascinating. This is exactly who the democratic voters wanted finally. Now it’s time to see how these policies actually work out.

What’s weird is the headline. From Wikipedia all I can tell is that Ritchie Torres sounds very progressive, with the exception of his Zionism and Some anti-immigration vote. Sounds like Jeet Heer wants a purity test.

He beat a weak candidate so need to consider this could be an exception and not some new trend. Cuomo is very beatable so it’s unclear if Mandani would win against a strong candidate. Buttigieg, for example, is a quality moderate candidate should could probably beat Mandani.
