I mean, there’s also the little fact that his primary opponent is a disgraced sex pest who had to resign the governorship and represents a flavour of the Democratic party that’s become increasingly toxic to an ever larger share of Dem voters. I assume the endorsement and support of one of the most popular Dem lawmakers in the country also helped a bit.
He still has to win the actual election. I wonder if Adams/Cuomo running as independents will help or hinder Mamdanis campaign?
Mamdani ran on a populist left platform. He understands social media marketing. He’s a Millenial and can speak to young New Yorkers on issues affecting them. The alternative was a Democratic establishment candidate, Andrew Cuomo. New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in, so imagine being low income living here.
Anyways, Mamdani is not mayor yet. They will attack him hard from all sides for his religious background, ethnic background, and being a Democratic Socialist. They already are. And Democrats who supported Cuomo won’t necessarily support him.
I don’t agree with a lot of his platform. Particularly, city run grocery stores, which are unsustainable. Yet if he becomes mayor and gets it done, it will be interesting to see data on a grocery store like this. Rent freezes, a place like NYC badly needs it. Free bus passes? Well, let’s see.
Even if you don’t agree with Mamdani politically, it shows what modern politics looks like to a modern electorate in a world where right-wing populism has become popular. Here’s an example of left-wing populism succeeding in messaging.
He’s not going to accomplish any of this. Mayors don’t have a lot of power, you have to vote for good premiers/governors.
Montreal elected a progressive mayor in 2017 and rents have gone up by an insane amount, and the cost of a monthly bus pass goes up every year. We did get quality bike lanes and traffic calming (which I like), but nothing really that helps working people save money.
The only time we had free buses was during the climate protest in 2019 (one measly day).
The only lesson to be learned here is by John Tory, and that is „don’t run“. I don’t get why these people think they can resign in disgrace, and then show up 3 years later and pretend nothing happened
They forgot to mention one of the most essential and distinguishing aspects of his campaign: he supports Palestine in face of the genocide and says he would arrest Benjamin Natanyahoo if he ever came to New York in line with international law and the ICC arrest warrant. His bravery on these issues is what makes his victory so remarkable. Usually these kinds of candidates are successfully bullied and buried by the media and others like Sara Jama here in Canada.
