$150 billion of spending out of about $400 billion in federal revenue, or about 37.5%. We’re already spending about $41 billion, so we only need to pay about 27% more in federal tax each year to pay for this :s
Can someone help me make sense of the math on this? How are we or any NATO member, for that matter supposed to afford 5% of GDP on military spending? Even the Americans only spend around 3.5%! Are we going to see creative accounting to make the numbers work, or is this just political theatre aimed at appeasing the Donald until he finds a new toy.

We’re going to put every penny of increase in Canada’s budget, plus significant cutbacks in spending in other areas into defense spending for a decade?
That is something that will almost certainly never happen.
Canadians won’t stand for it.
But hey, making promises we won’t bother to keep is something of a tradition in the defense arena, so I guess this is to be expected.
The thing I wonder is this, is this another indicator that a major war is on the horizon in the near term? That’s my more significant concern.
Something is being seen that is freaking various people out. Some of the logic of it seems sound. But is it really coming?
Apparently, the governments of 30 countries believe it is.
That’s a bit unsettling.
We’re already at 2% and part of getting there was moving things around (Coast Guard). Carney also says we can easily hit the 1.5% portion with current spending plans. So we’re already at or close to 3.5% TODAY. I don’t see why we couldn’t easily get to 4%. At that point, wait and see how other NATO members are doing.
This is so over the top, I’m positive they’re just saying this to shut Trump up. He won’t even be around in 10 years, so this is likely just taking something he likes to bitch about off the table.
Before the outrage:
Defense spending isn’t just on military and weapons. It can include critical infrastructure to support defence – like building airfields and shipping ports. We could use funding to build up the north, transport, in house steel manufacturing, mining for critical minerals…
It’s a very loose definition. We are not going to suddenly try and arm ourselves to the teeth like the americans…
