This seems more like a way for the RAF to get toys that the FAA can’t play with. If the B61s are only used for NATO then we already have Germany and the US to carry those nukes. In reality the nuclear capability will only be secondary to being conventional ground-based aircraft.
I just don’t get this.
Restoring RAF capacity for tactical nuclear strikes is one thing but why pick a nearly 60 year old obsolete bomb instead of an air launchable cruise missile… Stealth is not an absolute thing and the futher away the aircraft is when it launches it’s weapon the better.
Excellent decision for everyone involved. The RAF finally get the jets they want and good training to prepare for Tempest, the Navy guarantee at least 2 full CSGs of jets at all times, NATO gets another potential nuclear strike partner (not that we’ll ever actually be the ones operating the bombs, let’s be honest) and the government commits to defence spending where it’s needed.
Hopefully we acquire a slightly larger fleet in the future, but for now Typhoon FGR.4 still serves as the best possible aircraft for the RAF’s backbone. Another upside, Meteor and SPEAR-3 integration on both the A and B models should speed up significantly as well
Edit: also, people are reading into the nuclear role far too much. We aren’t buying these for that, we are buying them so the RAF can finally operate the jets most appropriate for them
Buy…. I wish we would make. What happened to the eurofighters, joint development with other European countries
To be clear, are we buying F35-A’s because they’re easier to maintain alongside the F35-B’s the Royal Navy has, and they just so happen to have the ability to launch American made nukes, or are we purchasing them to expand the delivery methods of a nuclear warhead?
If it’s the former, then it’s a bit of a disingenuous headline.
If the RAF is getting A variants some of the B should be permanently given to the RN. We learnt in WW2 that if the RAF owns all planes then the carrier aircraft end up poor or in too small numbers.
Then in the decade before the Invincibles were scrapped the harriers were placed into a joint command, then finally RAF control once we lost the carrier ability.
Now that we have great carriers again the RN shouldn’t be having to beg for fighters. The QE can fit 72 aircraft and POW on CSG25 will at maximum carry just 24 fighters, often they’ll carry 8 in NATO exercises, even Spain or Italy carry more on their carriers.
The RN needs to be allowed to buy and own fighters again.
How far back in the F-35A queue are we? Should put more eggs in tempest
Just how long will it take to receive these jets? I expect post 2030.
Good, unfortunately American is the only realistic 5th gen option, but good choice regardless. We should also buy a final batch of Eurofighter Typhoons before production ceases. The gap until Tempest will be long and potentially a time in which we’ll want every aircraft we can get.
