Makes sense to me. I went from being an avid movie goer to only seeing 1 one movie in a theater since COVID. I just didn’t miss it like I expected. It’s expensive, I can’t hit pause and good snacks are available at home too.

It’s too goddamn expensive. This really isn’t rocket science. It’s awesome to see stuff on the big screen, but it’s like $75 to take a family to the theater. No thanks.

Tickets are expensive. Food is expensive. People won’t shut up.
I’d gladly pay $30-$50 to rent a first run movie at home. I’ve got a 120” screen in the basement with a decent sound system, a popcorn machine and a pause button.

I barely go once a year anymore. It’s not comfortable. You’ve got to go around their schedule and sit uncomfortably and pay a small fortune. It’s just too many draw backs. I’d often rather see an old favorite film on the big screen than something new.

I finally got the A-List AMC membership to try it out. It’s pretty fun being able to see 4 movies a week. I don’t buy snacks cos I have a lot of allergies etc, so I just pay my monthly fee and go to the movies. I tend to go at the earliest times available so it’s less people.
Only complaint is the amount of previews. I timed 27 minutes of previews before they actually played 28 Years Later. (don’t bother, movie was dumpster juice) But other than that, I like the movies. Gets me out of the house ya know?

Anytime I think about going to see a movie I can find one , and not.have to deal with how damn expensive it is and the terrible people who do go.
I also watch pretty much everyovie that I want to see on Tik Tok for free. The quality maybe shite, but the money Tik Tok has saved me is worth it.

Twenty years seems like wishful thinking. It assumes a linear rate of decline, when shifts in consumer behavior due to new technology are usually exponential. Movie theatres have simply become an inferior mode of consumption. Like horses, some will always exist. But their glory days have passed.

Alamo REALLY kicks people out for acting like assholes which I love and appreciate so much because why on gods green earth are you paying $14 to watch something you could watch for free at home in a month if you’re just going to talk through it..?!

Gee I wonder why. First off the movies suck ass. People talking or on their phone making tik toks. Excessive previews and now commercials. And something most people don’t notice is how bad the technical setups of these theatre’s can be.

With inconsiderate people on their phones and texting and talking and potential violence in theatres it’s surprising they still exist.

Maybe make content that’s actually new and relevant to this generation instead of relying on IP that’s several decades old to bring in audiences.

Have they seen the size of my TV?
Why would I go to a theater?

I grew up in a family that went to the movies every week, but that pattern ended years ago. Not just for me, but also for my siblings and parents.
What my weekly movie going wasn’t the cost or the rise of streaming. It was the death of the mid-budget movie. The vast majority of movies that get a major theatrical release fit into one of four categories: Franchise Action Hero, Horror, Oscar, Kids. And you only get the Oscar bait near the holidays. Very few comedies get a wide release. There are far fewer book to screen adaptations. The scope of choice at the theater has gotten pretty narrow.
Add COVID on top of that and the audience was trained out of going to the theater.

I don’t care about the price, outright. My issue is I’m paying to be around people who are selfish, rude, and disrespectful. Crazy to me how basic unwritten social contracts don’t exist anymore — people now have full on conversations during the movie, or play their damn Nintendo Switch. Stay home…

The fact is the quality of filmmaking has gone down the drain…. No interest in superhero garbage or action explosions, leaves literally 2-3 films per year actually worth paying and hassle to go to cinema
EDIT: is there an explanation for this filmmaking decline?

Sound mixes have become so bad that I’d rather wait to watch it at home, so that I can turn on subtitles.
