So there’s this crazy thing called “acting” where a person is paid to pretend to be someone or something they aren’t for the purposes of entertainment.
Straight actors get cast in gay movies all the time. Call me by your name, power of the dog, queer. Some of these went to the Oscar’s and the actors were nominated. No one cares when these movies come out but in retrospect they all say it can’t be done again when in reality it’s done often.
Didn’t both characters have wives? So they were straight when not at the mountain wasn’t that like the whole point of the movie?
I’m so conflicted about this because I absolutely agree with the general notion – that often gets confused – that it’s about *opportunity*.
It’s not that a gay character automatically has to be played by a gay actor, it’s that there are a lot of gay actors (and add any label you want here) and they should probably be given the first shot at it, not much different than casting a Black dude instead of using Blackface.
But Jake Gyllenhaal and especially Heath Ledger were so spectacular in that, so real, so respectful to their characters as was the writing and direction. It’s a movie lauded by GLAAD and I think generally gets a very positive response from the LGBT community.
There’s a way to thread this needle.
Yeah, I don’t think anybody is asking for this. I don’t want gay actors limited to gay roles, and I don’t want straight actors limited to straight roles. Actor is the key word here. They act. Pretend to be things they aren’t in reality.
Wasn’t there just a movie at Cannes starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor as lovers? As far as I know neither of these actors have said they’re gay.
I don’t agree with this. Obviously characters that are POC should be played by POC actors, same with disabled characters. But queerness is a little more complicated than that. Who’s to say that Gyllenhaal is and Ledger was completely straight? And how is that our business? Why should we assume their sexualities, just because we live in a heteronormative society and they’ve only been in public relationships with women? I really hate that idea. There are actors today who primarily play straight roles but I suspect are closeted. Should they have to come out just to play a role they connect with?
It’s really not as progressive of an idea as people make it out to be.
They are actors. They pretend to other people for a living. I’m not like at all some anti-woke MAGA dude, not by a damn Grand Canyon, I’m all for representation but by this logic every sci fi movie would only be allowed to cast actual extra terrestrials…..the f*** out of here. He’s just being a pandering moron here.
I’m sure they’ll only hire straight actors for straight roles, right?
As long as no gay people can portray straight characters moving forward I’m cool with it.
I’m thankful I grew up in a time when such prequisites weren’t a thing, as I could not imagine another person giving the performance Ledger and Gyllenhaal gave in BM.
The sad thing is that it isn’t just a gay love story. It’s also possibly the best portrayal I have seen of loneliness and the damage done, not just to the person but those around them, by living in fear.
As a bi person I don’t give a shit if a character is played by a bi actor. If they are, that’s cool because representation is awesome. But…
If the auditions yield the actor best suited for the role is straight, cast him as a matter of making a better film. I don’t understand the problem.
Wow, this is sad to hear. They were both so great in it. Absolutely pathetic that this is what we’ve come to. If this is the direction, the film industry is going to go then they will continue to see diminishing returns at the box office.
I definitely see where they’re coming from, but
I feel like this is a perfect example of how this stuff goes a little too far sometimes. I’m sure there are fantastic gay actors who could have done a great job, but Heath is widely acknowledged as having been in a tier of acting shared by very few. He’s up there with guys like Brando and Daniel Day Lewis. The movie simply would not have been as powerful without him.
As a non-straight person, I’m okay with non-queer actors being cast as long as it’s respectful. Brokeback Mountain, and especially Ledger, was exceptional.
Rest In Peace, Heath. He gave so much tenderness, and love to this role. I’ll always respect him for how he toured this film, too.
It would be a corny hallmark level acting film if made today. Closer to Barbie than Brokeback
I’m gay and I don’t need only gay actors playing gay roles.
This is like saying a gay actor can’t play a straight character. They’re acting no matter what in every relationship, they don’t actually love each other in any movie

Gay actors play straight characters all the time. I get the sentiment but that’s why they are actors.
Gone Girl director recently said he wouldn’t cast Neil Patrick Harris today.
This is like the bull burr joke about bryan Cranston being a quadrapalgic , it’s called acting you wouldn’t hire a real seriel killer to play Jeffrey dahmer, or getting upset you see a actor in a movie when in the last movie you watched they got shot

But even if he were, he’s still an actor who should portray whoever he wants.
I don’t think limiting him or Heath Ledger based on their sexual orientations would’ve helped their careers.
It’s called acting for a reason. So no more actors? Just people being themselves on camera? That’s called a reality show not a movie. Hollywood is obsolete.

I don’t care what actors and actresses do in their bedrooms at home. Same goes for everyone I do any sort of business with. Just be great at your job.
The movie was a classic because the just cast the two best ACTORS

Then it would have been a worse film, because they casted basically the two best actors in the world at the time who fell in the sort of age range the film needed.
