      But I was told that the free market increases competition which leads to better service and lower prices as landlords compete against each other for tenants

      Parasites that see profiting off the poor as a „job“ don’t want to spend money ensuring their properties are fit for human habitation? I am surprised……

      I wonder how many of those had to be built to a low standard to meet regulations.

      Surprised it is so low.

      I haven’t lived in a rental in all my years renting that wasn’t at some level substandard.

      I even moved into a flat that was brand new, but the landlord had cut so many corners in the build it rapidly fell apart in 6 months.

      The headline is misleading (what a surprise). The linked report is for SOCIAL housing, not private rentals. An important distinction. Not saying that the this shouldn’t be applicable for all properties but generally the standards couldn’t be enforceable without removing properties from the market. For example, the single ‚flats‘ in London that are just big enough for a single bed would clearly not be legal for social housing

      And tenants are not likely to complain as they risk being evicted and having to find a new home and all the upfront and moving costs.

      Not remotely surprising. When I was renting, every home was substandard and cost significantly more per month than I now pay on my mortgage. The value for money for tenants is appalling.
