Elio had one of the worst promotional campaigns I’ve seen from Pixar.
Everyone kiss original Pixar films goodbye.
Elio was fantastic. It’s a shame. I think they need to go back to the action oriented naming though. Its like if they would have called Brave „Merida“. Tell people what it’s about. Call it Starstruck or something.
I feel like I spend a bulk of my day online and have seen basically zero promotions for any of these, but especially in light of how aggressively Disney films are usually marketed. The only Elio promo I recall seeing was literally on a box of Ellios pizza, which isn’t even national.

Saw Elio today, a really solid family film. Sadly, the screening was only about 25-33% full. It’s not Pixar’s best, but a long way from their worst.
No idea that Pixar movie was out until reading this. Had I known I prob would have taken my kids and their friends yesterday when we were trying to figure out what to do lol

Just came back from the theater for 28 Years Later and let me tell you, what a shit movie. Alex Garland is hit or miss, and this was a big miss.
Disney and Chapek really tarnished Pixar’s perceived “quality” with the Disney+ forced release of Soul, Luca and Turning Red.
Disney did a piss poor job marketing it.

Unfortunately, Elio’s box office isn’t surprising. Sci-fi/fantasy Disney films targeted to boys that aren’t musicals usually don’t do well.
People oddly blamed this on gay people existing for Lightyear and Strange World, when those just performed par the course for Disney. Paranorman was a success years before with a main gay supporting character. Mitchells vs the Machines was a success for Netflix with a lesbian protagonist.
For example:
Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Mars Needs Moms, Meet The Robinsons, Black Cauldron, Sword In The Stone, and even Pinocchio.
These films usually don’t perform well at box office, but are fondly remembered afterwards.
28 Years Later would have been an alright movie if it was not a part of the 28 Days Later franchise.
It reminds me of Joker, in the sense that it would have been fine on it’s own, but because it was lumped into an already established franchise that really had nothing to do with the movie, it did NOT deliver at all.
This felt like one of those „artsy white girl vibes“ type of movies that you watch when you are going through an existential crisis
Parents aren’t going to pay $60-$80 to go see a mediocre looking Pixar movie that will be on Disney+ in 2 months

Elio was Pixar’s best since Coco, damn shame
