The House isn’t going to extend its session beyond today, so this doesn’t really buy more time to study and debate the Building Canada Act, and both votes will almost certainly pass regardless. But fundamentally it’s the right call, so it’s good to see Scarpaleggia making it.
Good on the speaker.
Sure i’d prefer we extend sitting to debate longer but at least we will know where our MP’s stand.
I hope the same is done with C2. That will be the real test of the speakers independence as it isn’t a complete guarantee to have both parts pass.
Hopefully they can hammer this out into something robust and useful that can get things done quickly and efficiently.
I suppose we can chalk it up to Carney’s political inexperience that he tried to get a monster of a bill through the way he did. I also think we need to get things done – quickly – because the situation is urgent. But alot of the highlighted flaws make sense when they’re pointed out and need to be ironed out though. Seems kind of first draft sort of bill, I guess.
It’s too bad none of the other Libs told him this wouldn’t pass vetting. It’s sort of weird; I was unhappy he didn’t get a majority, but I guess we dodged a bullet. Especially on the OTHER bill, which needs to be exploded.
The first part, about eliminating trade barriers, are probably really easy to do away with so it makes sense to take that part out and pass it.
Good. It was clearly 2 different bills. It won’t change anything on a practical level, since they’ll vote on them both today anyway and not give that second half any more time, and both will pass, but at least MPs can show support for part 1 and not 2.
Big omnibus bills almost always seem like a Trojan Horse of some kind. There should be a relatively low threshold to force splitting a bill into smaller pieces to be considered individually.
