WHY?! Why would he do this to us? He must really not like his family that much, good lord man. You’re 71. And to be clear, I’m aware that Chow is 68. The difference is that at her age she’s been a far more active mayor in her year and a half than Tory was in 9. He was lethargic even just in his 60s. What’s he going to be when he’s 76? Will he ever stop running? Does he just want to be God King of Toronto’s Doom?
And what does he even want to accomplish? He destroyed the city’s finances and they were thankfully saved by Chow. What does he think he’d do better? The only reasonable conclusion I can reach is that he wants to pile up some more corruption but dude, you cash out on that when you’re old. You don’t get anything out of your quid pro quos while you’re in office. Is he actually just so addicted to wearing his Winner Hat? Does he feel so vehemently opposed to Chow that he’s going to spend his whole life blocking anyone else from the mayoralty? Please, someone explain this man to me. His motivations are as inscrutable as his accomplishments.
At that point why even retire to begin with? It’s been less than two years since Tory retired & if he hadn’t, he’d likely still be mayor etc. The process of retiring, then running for the exact same elected position a couple years out just feels like Tory was bored by retirement and wants to continue where he left off as a mayor etc.
If he was running for a different office, (like the leader of the OLP, or trying to garner OPC support away from Ford etc.) I could maybe see a reason for it, but trying to be mayor again, when he’s 71 and municipal politics have likely moved past him is a waste of everyone’s time. (arguably even Tory’s). It’d be like Nenshi deciding he’d want to run as Calgary’s mayor again shortly after leaving instead of running for the ANDP.
If Tory wanted out of retirement, he should have either aimed for a provincial (or even a federal) posting, or some sort of well regarded diplomatic/beaurocratic position etc.
