Israel’s surprise attack on Iran, greenlighted by the US, means that states across the world will be more likely to rely in future on force and raw power to gain their ends, ignoring any moral, legal or diplomatic restraints.
Donald Trump has returned to Washington, saying that 10 million people “should evacuate Tehran”, [presumably because the Iranian capital faces the same death and destruction](https://inews.co.uk/news/world/explosions-heard-in-tehran-as-israel-announces-strike-on-iran-3746891?ico=in-line_link) as Gaza.
Trump is now deciding whether or not to send American B-2 bombers, carrying GBU-57 bombs weighing 30,000 pounds, to destroy the Iranian uranium enrichment plant at Fordo deep inside a mountain. This may not end the war, but it would certainly make the US a co-belligerent with Israel in a Middle East war, upending Trump’s claim to[ be the great peacemaker](https://inews.co.uk/opinion/trumps-half-cock-diplomacy-leaves-middle-east-brink-3752360?ico=in-line_link).
Possibly, the Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei will emulate Ruhollah Khomeini when he “drained the bitter cup” in 1988 and ended the Iran-Iraq war as the US openly sided with Iraq. On the other hand, Khamenei may feel that admitting defeat by Israel would be so humiliating that it would prove a mortal blow to the prestige – and even existence – of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Israel justifies going to war by claiming that Iran was close to acquiring a nuclear weapon, though as recently as March, the director of the US National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, said that the US intelligence did not believe that Khamenei had decided that Iran should build a nuclear device.
Iran was the one nation-state in the region with military power still opposing Israel, while 50 years ago hostile states would have included Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Libya and several others which have since been ravaged by civil war or are politically neutered.
The wars over the last year have changed the political landscape of the Middle East – and to a degree the world – in some obvious but also less apparent ways. Iran’s Axis of Resistance against Israel has been seriously weakened with the crushing of Hamas and Hezbollah, while the Houthis in Yemen are under severe pressure from Israeli airstrikes.
While Trump’s actions certainly stirred controversy and had real consequences in the Middle East—like moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and the Soleimani strike—it’s important to put the broader picture into context. The deep-rooted resentment toward the U.S. in the region didn’t begin with Trump. A lot of it stems from earlier U.S. foreign policy, especially under George W. Bush.
The 2003 Iraq War, based on flawed intelligence about WMDs, caused massive civilian casualties and long-term destabilization. That war alone fueled anti-American sentiment for a generation and is still a major source of anger and mistrust in the region today. Even before that, U.S. support for authoritarian regimes and involvement in coups (like in Iran in 1953) helped shape regional attitudes.
Trump may have added fuel to the fire, but the fire’s been burning for decades.
Odd, that this post omits the fact that the Iranian leaders have called for over several decades for the destruction of the state of Israel –

It’s a little bit ignorant to pin all the „hatred“ in the middle east on Trump. Iran is equally at fault.
