James Gunn has a “number-one reason” why he believes the “movie industry is dying.”
The filmmaker and co-head of DC Studios recently told Rolling Stone that a lot of the bad movies being released are due to production dates being set before scripts are completely finished.
“I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies. It’s not because of home screens getting so good,” Gunn said. “The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.”
Ironically, the first movie of the MCU (Iron Man) was filmed without a finished script
He’s clueless if he really thinks that’s the cause. A complete lack of original ideas is the cause.
He’s got a valid point but, if the scripts are ass…who cares if they’re finished or not?
That’s bullshit. It’s streaming services that’s killing the movie industry. If the movie industry is relying on marvel to make movies then it deserves to die.
Fun fact: Casablanca was shot without an ending and the reason Ingrid Bergman looks so ethereal throughout is that she didn’t know which man her character loved or who she would end up with at the end of the film.
Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to mind. They were making it up as they went along. He has a point. But, some talented people work well without a (finished) script.

Or is it because you guys are basically making exclusively superhero slop for the last 15 years nobody cares about because the money people only greenlight safe ips that have already proven to be massive successes?
I think the rest of us can agree it’s more to do with hyper inflated budgets and high cost of movie tickets
