Carney plays social psychology like a fiddle .
I couldn’t imagine seeing Trudeau or Poilievre hosting this event in this environment.
„I have concepts of a plan“ remains my favourite Trump quote.
Seriously, it works for everything. „Have you done the dishes?“ „I have concepts of a plan.“
Or the quote in question. That works too. „Have you done the laundry?“ „I have a laundry concept. My wife has a different concept.“
It doesn’t surprise me that DJT is a „tariff guy“. It’s easy for him, just slap x% on everything coming in, collect a bunch of money from importers for a few months and then later say you „got a deal“ and take the tariff down or off. By then people forgot that they were supposed to be getting new jobs/manufacturing from this whole nonsense and in the meantime you’ve collected a bunch of revenues. You sit there and look like you cleared some deficit and people are relieved that the prices have come back down (hopefully).
It’s a short term game that doesn’t consider impacts over the longer term to your economy, to jobs, to sectors etc.
Carney would be looking to get him back to what was working for us as much as possible. But I wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen right away because it doesn’t serve Trump’s goals.
Give up on making a deal with him. It makes no difference what’s in it when he can’t be trusted. He will break it a week later if it suits him.
Every once in awhile he accidentally tells the truth. Carney understands what a tariff is and what it does. Trump does not. He just thinks it means the other guy pays admission into the market.
