It’ll be interesting to see the next step for the NDP. They need a new leader, but I think Charlie’s right in pointing out a cult of personality is not a strategy. They got lucky with Layton, but the danger is what happens when those leaders are gone.

Mulcair had less than zero charisma, and also drove the party hard to the centre, but he could have gotten away with the policy compromises if he had been an inspiring leader and.. ya know.. won.

But it’s also really hard to build a grass roots, wide spread campaign without an inspiring leader to be the face of the revival. So it’ll be a very delicate balance of finding a good, charismatic, passionate leader who can inspire people (and fundraise) while also ensuring the party doesn’t live and die with them. You need to attract a strong team around the leader, which is also hard to do when the party is in such a terrible state.
