Extremely sad. To me, capital is always something that should represent the entire country and receive special treatment from the goverment, as it is the place to make business, to arrive at etc. Given how many connections cross in Brussels (TGV, DB, Eurostar, airport etc.) I really can’t wrap my head around why the goverment does not subsidise heavily renovations of Brussels Nord, Midi or other central areas of the city – it seems like such an no-brainer to me. Any euro you invest in strategic facilities in Brussels will return to Belgian economy much more in tourism, business and future private investment.
Regardless of there not being a government, I always thought it was a weird logic:
„Losing too much money? Well, let’s change their credit rating **so they lose even more**“.
Which is what happens. They have to pay more on their loans. So they’re losing more money than before.
„Hey, we think they should work in a certain way, and they’re not, so let’s change things so it’s even harder for them to make the change“.
“When the Brussels Region is unable to roll over its debt at a tolerable interest rate, that’s when you can expect that knock on the Prime Minister’s door”
Considering the political reaction to the proposed merger of the police zones, I don’t think that conversation will be quiet and calm, because the PM is going to ask for way more.
Let’s end Brussels as a region. The more time pass the worse it gets. Make it a part of the Flemish region with some linguistic special status.
I’m ashamed of Brussels, the first thing people see are those disgusting train stations in Brussels. Destroys our reputation all because of political games.
