Californians could unironically be taxed less and benefit more if we stopped paying federal taxes.

I think we receive something like $60 billion less from the fed than we pay, right? We could just nix $60b in taxes – or reinvest them in infrastructure and see immediate, massive social improvements.

How would this even work? Federal payroll taxes are withheld from our paychecks. They’re not collected by the state and then disbursed to the IRS

Thing is how to do this federal taxes dont pass through the state. Unfortunately even if Californians decided to all refuse to pay federal taxes and business ultimately complied. The government would just start legally going after people who do not pay.

Stop floating. Fire up the motor or whatever analogy people want to use. The states have wantonly allowed the consolidation of federal power for 80years. There were good, specific, reasons for it. The states, especially California, need to reclaim and litigate their state powers.

    5. Your constituents demand it. Go fash, no cash. Trump illegally took control of California’s National Guard to oppress **our** cities. I’m done with these assclowns. Not a single cent to these Nazi fucks.

    6. Need other blues states rallying behind this threat, threatening the same. Pritzker, get in on this drama and have IL back CA.

Fun fact seen in this article: there are 11 „donor states“ that pay more in federal taxes than they get back in federal dollars. The top 10 of the 11 all are blue states that went to Harris.

In other words: Those of us in those ten states pick up the bill for the welfare baby red states that would sink without us.

Why should my federal tax dollars subsidize a government that is actively taking away my rights and freedoms?

    9. If he wants to make a bigger impact, just shutdown all the ports in California. A federal tax boycott won’t impact as many people as just shutting down all the ports in California would

California could (perhaps, I’m not an accountant) pass a state law requiring all California-based businesses to stop withholding federal income taxes. This would place the burden of payment on the individual (and many would not pay) and force the much depleted post-DOGE IRS to go after them.

As a business owner I already self-pay quarterly, but right now I am holding all payments until the end of FY2025 to see how things shake out. Fuck TACO and his Republican sycophants.

    11. This is the only way to bring this maggot government back in line.

Cutoff their flow of tax dollars from the states filling the burden.

and this is why I filed for an extension and advised everyone in Los Angeles to do the same. We were all eligible because of the fires.

Been saying this since Trump threatened to withhold wild fire relief money. Let’s see the government function when the purse strings are cut. And spare me the „civil war declaration“ bullshit that some users have given me in past threads when I’ve proposed this. The federal government has been stomping all over the 10th amendment, the state should have the right to tell them to F off. If the cowards in DC see that as a civil war declaration, so be it. One could make the argument we got there when orange Hitler sent uninvited troops into a state without true authority. So if the Fed wants to play, the Dem donor states should take the ball and go to their court flipping double birds.

    14. You know how some people say, Don’t California my *insert state here*? Well past time California says, okay we’re done subsidizing your broken ass state

We need to secede from Gilead. The red states obviously are OK living under a Christo-fascist regime, so be it.

    16. walksonfourfeet on

No taxation without representation. The federal government has admitted that they do not represent sanctuary, cities, and blue states.

    17. Newsom could say that all federal taxes will be diverted to the state’s funds and will go into effect right now unless Trump completely backs off California’s universities, immigration system, and anything else. Furthermore, even if TACO backs down on the above, enough federal taxes will be withheld while Trump is in office to cover the wild fire situation since Trump won’t use the federal government to help.

    18. Upper_Reflection_90 on

Do it. Why are we as a state paying to fund this fascist regime?!

Stop talking about it and be about it. Don’t threaten me with a good time.

Fun fact – states not paying the equivalent of taxes is what led us to the formation of the constitution.

    21. This fundamentally makes no sense. Californians do not pay federal taxes to the CA state government who then passes them along… they pay federal taxes to the treasury DIRECTLY.

There is no opportunity for the CA state government to block those payments, so it has no physical ability to enforce a boycott.

    22. All blue states should boycott Trump and set up trade agreements amongst ourselves.

    23. What is even Newsom’s plan here? Am I supposed to take on personal liability by withholding federal tax payments? Will the state do anything to protect me when the federal government comes after me for nonpayment?

If New York and the rest of the New England states join in, we’re in for some interesting times for sure
