Article feels a bit bad faith when sadly a poor lad took his own life over the body dysmorphia about losing his hair and the Sun plasters his face all over an article saying over and over again ‘Sam was losing his hair.’ Just feels wrong to me.

Dutasteride isn’t unlicensed, its use for hair loss prevention is off label but can be prescribed by private hair loss clinics as a last resort.
Some of these hairloss drugs are brutal on the sides. It just ain’t worth it.
Luckily I dont suffer from balding. It’ll happen one day and I’ll embrace it.
They need to ban all these hair loss drugs. It pushes a crazy body image and they all have some shitty side effects.
Those flights to turkey to support a fascist economy are also not really great.
Bald is bald and that’s alright.
But in the age of 6 figures, 6 fr and 6 pack I’m not surprised.

Woman loses hair and confidence – you have to be sensitive.
Man is balding or bald – anything goes – guy should “man up”, nothing wrong with being bald, comment on how much older they look.
Double standards
Losing your hair young can take serious blow to you mental health and most people seem to think it’s funny to point out.
I think the body dysmorphia issue over hair loss is completely overlooked by a lot of people. Men especially who simply have little control over it.
I’m 35, I have male patterned baldness and thinning hair, and I have been since I was 25, I take two medications to combat this. I still have a fair amount of hair for my age.
Jokes are made by coworkers, friends and family to the state of my hair. Recently I was subject to a small tirade by one of the kids of the family who took screenshots from a video of me highlighting areas of my hair which are still thinning despite treatment.
Body dysmorphia in this country is insane. Mainly caused by social media and shitty reality tv like love island.
Look I look young anyway but I think people think me and my partner look younger than we are when everyone at our age looks 35 rather than 26 because so many people have plastic surgery especially women that make themselves look older than they are.
dutasteride being unlicensed isn’t true afaik it’s just less commonly used than finasteride and more powerful as it blocks more conversion of T to DHT. really sad but I think blaming it on dutasteride is a little insensitive given he was clearly struggling with his image for a long time and sounds like he tried a lot. not being able to go on is tragic but taking the last thing he did and attributing it to that blindly is really shit.
I mean it’s the sun so I am not surprised but fina and duta help a lot of people. this just sounds like a tragic story.
I don’t think I’ll ever forgive the „beauty“ industry for the harm it’s done. Selling people thousands of pills, creams and surgeries they don’t need for profit, and leaving anyone who doesn’t end up matching the narrow image of beauty to feel like a failure.
Ultimately it’s society that’s a mess and the fact people have to go this far to try and have hair! It’s a superficial nothing but people have been programmed to think it’s important. Poor guy.
That’s very sad, the side effects of finasteride are well known. I didn’t know dutasteride wasn’t licensed in the UK, specially since according to the SmPC the drug is well tolerated and the side effects are supposed to be less prevalent. Very sad that he had no side effects on the old medication yet it was the newer, safer one that got him on the wrong side.
I’m trans and one of the many reasons I stopped taking testosterone was because I didnt want to lose my hair.
People make jokes about male pattern baldness all the time. I had a thing with someone who had a hair transplant around the age of 19/20, because going bald so young took a huge toll on his self esteem.
I think that overall, women are subjected to far more pressure when it comes to beauty standards, but it does seem like mocking men for hair loss is still socially acceptable. It’s awful – we should all be more careful instead of making fun of someone’s appearance, especially when it comes down to the genetic lottery.
If you’re struggling with anything like this – anything – and are offered therapy, please take it.
It’s not a way to dismiss your issues, but a way to work through and confront them, build resilience and self esteem. It is so, so worth it, especially if it’s an all consuming anxiety. Very sad for this young man
While maybe not directly linked, I’ve mentioned this before –
It seems odd we’re freely allowing people to self prescribe finasteride when it’s quite a harsh and potentially dangerous drug, and the slowing (not reversal) of hair loss is merely a side effect.
Finasteride can suppress natural testosterone levels (after a small initial increase) which plays havoc with mental health.
Losing your hair? Made fun of.
Lost your hair? Made fun if.
Use rogaine / drugs to try and get hair back? Made fun of.
Get a hair transplant? Made fun of.
It’s a total lose lose situation. Poor guy.
