Britain is already at war with Russia, one of the authors of the government’s strategic defence review has warned, while arguing that the UK can no longer rely on the US as a dependable ally.

Dr Fiona Hill, who served as the White House’s chief Russia adviser during Donald Trump‘s first term, said the UK is in “pretty big trouble”, warning that the country is stuck between “the rock” of Russia aggression and the “hard place” of an increasingly unreliable US under Mr Trump.

“Russia has hardened as an adversary in ways that we probably hadn’t fully anticipated,” Dr Hill told The Guardian, concluding that “Russia is at war with us”.

Arguing that the Kremlin has been “menacing the UK in various different ways” for years, she cited “the poisonings, assassinations, sabotage operations, all kinds of cyber-attacks and influence operations. The sensors that we see that they’re putting down around critical pipelines, efforts to butcher undersea cables”.“

I mean she’s not wrong is she. Let’s consider the state of the UK:

– No energy security (we rely on energy from abroad)
– No food security (we import about half our food)
– The last few steel mills teetering on the brink
– A handful of shipyards left
– an army so small it is more appropriately described as a self defence force
– carriers that don’t have a full complement of planes and for a period of time didn’t have any
– the navy’s just got a single supply ship back after a period of relying on friends and allies
– the last two trident tests reported in the papers failed
– the deterrent relies on the US for maintenance
– our stock of shells and munitions is severely depleted as we are (quite rightly) supplying Ukraine
– edited to add that carriers aside our navy is smaller than France’s

Add onto that we have an economy where in real terms wages have only just risen above 2008 levels.

I mean defence needs urgently sorting out. But then we all need a pay rise. And the record nhs waiting lists need sorting out.

It’s a mess. Labour have inherited a complete mess. How the media are not screaming about the responsibility of the coalition and Tory governments for this is a disgrace.
