Exit politics or caucus with the Democrats?
Sure, he is just saying this to keep people off his back. When it comes time he will vote however tRump tells him because the GOP are all spineless nazis.
Ask lettuce about her political future as well. Well, we don’t have a tomato to ask the same question, unfortunately.
He can hardly be considered to be standing up to Trump on the most important major issues. He voted for the „One Big Beautiful Bill Act“ that guts Medicaid and extends tax cuts benefiting the rich.
He did oppose the renaming the Gulf of Mexico to Trump’s preferred name for the body of water. And publicly called on Trump to fire Hegseth for sharing sensitive information on an unsecured text messaging app. He is all for cracking down on immigrants, but did not support exclusion of Afghans who helped Americans.
His comment about the cliff is just a publicity stunt.
He voted for the bill. Soooo fuck off.
Bacon is all talk and no action. He has voted with Trump 100% of the time in 2025. After promising to vote against Medicaid cuts, he went ahead and voted for Trump’s ugly bill that cuts both Medicaid and Medicare. Bacon asserted that the Congress has power over tariffs and then voted to give that power to Trump. Don’t believe what he says.
Oh dang, surely as a Republican of character he voted against the insane reconciliation bill a few weeks ago right?
>[„I worked closely with Republican leadership to advocate for the needs of Nebraskans and this bill, while not perfect, reflects that.”](https://bacon.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2679)
Dude voted for Trumps bill.
He’s already over the lip of the cliff.
instead of stay and use his position to do something now, he retires. Coward and totally typical
As one of his constituents and someone who served directly under his command… no! Do not give this sleezebag credit for anything.
He will vote in lockstep with his party only getting to stray when it will not affect the outcome.
So no, Don Bacon is not a martyr, he is not a centrist, he is another self serving member of the Government Overreach Party who is scared of the midterms. He does this every other year before re-election. Then he will vote with Trump and party 99% of the time.
Screw you Don Bacon. I hope Cavanaugh sends your ass packing.
People are giving him crap for voting for that bill, and they should. But you can’t dismiss this altogether. Taking down Trumpism has to start with cracks.
Then why’d he vote for the dumb ugly bill? Little too late to jump from the ship there bud.
Groovy. Thanks for the thoughts and prayers after you helped them screw us over, Pigman.
He should defect instead, send a message other than being the usual GOP coward that leaves office without trying to redeem himself or do something by his constituents.
Eh…he voted for that big beautiful bullshit bill. “Believe what I say and not what I do” shouldn’t get media attention.
Lol he helped steer it off the cliff and whether hes in the front or back of the car, its still going over the cliff.
He says as his party lies in shambles at the bottom of a cliff.

Omaha resident and long-time Bacon watcher here. Do not believe this nonsense about him being reasonable and affable, leaning into his vote against renaming the Gulf of Mexico while ignoring he’s complicit with everything else. It’s sad that our standards have fallen so low that he’s described as a ‚moderate‘ by anyone but it’s lunacy to suggest he’s presidential material. To the extent that he can do some good in this moment we should absolutely cheer him on and give him all the support he needs to be successful *at doing good*, but let’s not be confused about who we’re dealing with.
He has spent his entire public career peddling corrosive lies that have hurt our community and country. I have a lot of stories. Since he specifically brought up the PEPFAR program (W. gets credit, but Dr. Fauci and the NIAID designed it) in this interview, let’s focus on that first.
Periodically, Bacon will hold a fake town hall. By fake I mean: he literally and figuratively phones it in, ensconced in his safe-space. People ask serious questions and he spews low-effort gish-gallop in response while injecting 2-5 reminders that he used to be in the military. After 60 minutes of failing to do the bare minimum he hangs up and runs away even when thousands of people have taken time out of their day to ask questions and hear what he has to say. His most recent was this spring, after (among many other outrages this year) attacks on USAID had already resulted in many totally predictable and preventable deaths, with millions of deaths on the way. When this came up, he defended the attempts to destroy USAID by asserting that only ‚waste, fraud, and abuse‘ was being targeted, claiming USAID was wasting tons of money on „atheists in Nepal“. I have a recording of this if anyone wants to be even more depressed. He’s not a good person and he’s an abysmal leader.
Keep in mind that Omaha is the medical and scientific research hub for the entire region. Infectious diseases and cancer are the local speciality. When the Republican party declared via the mouth of Joni Ernst that ‚the doctors are making it up for money!‘ at the height of the pandemic he kept his mouth shut, hoping to benefit from the effect that lie had on the base while not being held accountable for telling the lie himself or risking anything by sticking his neck out to condemn evil. People suffered and died as a result of his choice but that’s a sacrifice he’s willing to make. He’s doing exactly the same thing during this crisis.
On the call this spring he beat his chest about how important the oath of office is to him. In over 12 years I haven’t seen any evidence that would support this claim. It’s not as if he spoke loudly about how important his oath is and then explained what he was going to do to uphold it during the current crisis. No, he just moved on to the next unserious answer and continues to spend 2025 spitting on his oath. Meanwhile, I know PhD students trying to get out of the country because they don’t feel safe here anymore.
Trump spent most of Biden’s term holding rallies where he’d promise he was going to do all sorts of unconstitutional things and throw a wide variety of people he doesn’t like into gulags: scientists, journalists, the homeless, people who say mean things to him, various flavors of immigrants, etc. How did Bacon conduct himself during that period? Well, a little over two years ago he held one of his fake town halls right in the middle of all that. When asked earnestly for his opinion about the criminal charges against Trump (the January 6th case and the classified documents case were in the news cycle that week), Bacon responded by claiming that all of the criminal charges against Trump were made up for political reasons and that, if ‚they‘ manage to convict Trump, „they’re coming for YOU next.“
A vicious anti-American lie from a man the NYTimes describes as a „moderate Republican.“
These examples barely scratch the surface but if I make this longer no one will read it. He’s an ‚ends justify the means‘ religious extremist who lies like he breathes and works hard to sacrifice the America of tomorrow for the billionaires and theocrats of today. Presidential material? Secretary of Defense? Bacon screwed up voting for the PACT act. Were they both high during this interview?
Cheer him on when he actually *does* something good. Seriously, it’s important to do so and helps demonstrate a viable off-ramp from this madness to members of the GOP, but cheer him on for *results* not words. He is relentlessly dishonest. Promises and oaths from him mean exactly nothing.
Exit? Why normal fight it? Why vote for the bill and then say enough is enough? Dude is getting pushed out for someone else and they’re allowing him to take the high road.
I suspect he’ll be heading for the exit.
Bullshit. Bacon says the right things but votes in lockstep with the GOP. He is a goon.
He’ll still vote for his stupid policies, ignore the slight of hand he’s trying to pull here.
If you truly think they’re falling off the cliff, how about doing the hard job of trying to steer them away instead of bailing like a coward
Book deal?
We. Are. Already. Over. The. Cliff. Asshole.
I’m sorry, is the bar really so low that “gosh, I don’t agree with this at all” after *voting for it* makes you a standout? Jfc lol
Yeah not so fast. You created this mess. You don’t get to pass go and collect $200. You are going to stay exactly where you are and be held to fix it. « I’m sorry I torched your house. I’m just going to go home now »! Typical!
