Makes it harder to negotiate with nuance when your entire election campaign was based on your ability to fight elbows up against the same people you now have to work together with.
There is ample opportunity for theatre, and, with so many opposing agendas, a high probability.
While the Europeans can probably be counted on to maintain a consistent, united message, Trump obviously will try to undermine that, and to show-boat. He may just blow up the entire summit, if he feels he’s not getting the attention he deserves, leaving Carney with the difficult job of demonstrating that the will of G7 nations can withstand Trump’s chaos.
Modi is the other wild card. A late seat at the table, on the condition that he behave himself may be too much for his ego to bear. I can see him making unreasonable demands, and them storming off in a huff, to discredit those who he will label as racist imperialists dishonoring Hindustan.
One has to give Carney credit. He’s definitely running towards the fire to contain it, rather than running away in fright.
