Was sind meine Optionen?

That sounds reasonable. You should have applied for unemployment benefits, they would have paid the fees then.
When employed, you pay around 14% to the Krankenkasse but the employer also pays a good share!
As an alternative, if you are married or in an alike relationship, you could have selected „familienversichert“ through your spouse. Then you wouldn’t have to pay anything either.
if you started the new job within 30 days after ending the last job you‘re good, research „gesetzliche nachversicherungspflicht“. if it was over 30 days you need to pay. you could have avoided this by filing for unemployment benefits. thes include health insurance
I think it’s best to talk to them on the phone, and ask for solutions. I also believe it’s way too much, especially that you didn’t have any income. Perhaps you can present them with proof?
Also, I always thought that the insurance stays active for one month after you loose/quit the job… but maybe I got confused with how the rules are in my country, tho it’s still in EU.
You do not really have options. As a voluntary member of the public insurance, you have to pay the maximum rate in the first month between jobs without unemployment benefits.
Maybe you could ask your new job if you can start early as this would mean you are not a full month outside of employment and thus would change the rules

You have a „nachgehender Leistungsanspruch“ for maximally one month between two jobs. If you were only unemployed for one month before starting the new job, you don’t have to pay this. For larger gaps you have to register as unemployed to receive health insurance.
I would recommend to tell your insurance in writing that the month should be covered by the nachgehender Leistungsanspruch.
Edit: wow there is an incredible amount of misinformation in the answers.
The Beitrag is determined by your annual income. 1138,34€ should therefore be the right amount. You have to cover for June both parts of the Beitrag (yours and your employers). I don’t see anything wrong with this letter – but no expert
no. just fill out the their forms and the rate will be reduced.
Tell them that your income is 0€ and you will pay 257.78€
This can’t be real. Why would anybody have to pay more than 1000 euros per month. Even private insurance is a lot cheaper.
