So they’re going to build a bunch of windmills to export electricity? Such a boring business model. The variance in power generation means no one can rely on it as a base load and when its windy they’ll gutter their own pricing. Is it even viable without the feds paying for the transmission lines?
Build data centers, make hydrogen, do something with the excess power locally.
Love it.
Obviously the energy that a project like this would generate would significantly exceeds local demand, but between ramping up energy intensive refining + production processes and exports, it’s worth at least considering, and Houston is working with what he’s got while being mindful of the broader objectives of the national investment strategy (eg find a productive use for excess steel capacity, develop local technical expertise in energy generation, etc).
No idea whether the project itself is actually viable, not in my wheelhouse at all, but fully on board for Premiers bringing this kind of broad strokes thinking to the table to for further refinement + vetting.
Who are they going to sell power to other than maybe some US states?
They are a tiny market, their region is a tiny market. Quebec doesn’t need it, Ontario doesn’t need it.
You get to a point where if you’re building a transmission line from NS to AB to move some electricity why not just build the wind farms on the Prairies?
Premiers need to take this time in our history seriously. This is a joke of a proposal in all honesty.
