    1. „Comparatively 16 per cent of Conservative supporters said they view the U.S. as an enemy country, while 36 per cent of Liberal supporters and 41 per cent of NDP supporters said the same.“

      There’s the important breakdown.

Who wants to guess that the Con supporters are also more likely to shrug at the border and say ‚but I didn’t have any problems at the border when I went for my weekly shopping trip!‘ ?

    2. >Older Canadians, those at least 55 years of age, were more likely to consider the U.S. an enemy than younger Canadians. Regionally Albertans were most likely to consider the U.S. an ally while Ontarians and British Columbians were most likely to see it as an enemy.

BC has a long history of softwood lumber and fisheries disputes with the Americans, and Ontario similarly has a long history of steel and manufacturing disputes with the USA. There’s[ a great deal of WTO dispute history there](https://www.wto.org/english/tratop_e/dispu_e/dispu_maps_e.htm?country_selected=CAN&sense=e), and that’s the start of it.

I’m not surprised that Albertans are friendliest towards them. The USA is hungry for energy, and it’s not like they can simply move the tar sands south. Albertans can love America because feeding their addiction to oil and gas has made Alberta rich.

      >The difference is starkest between political party supporters, with 44 per cent of Conservative supporters saying they view the U.S. as an ally, compared with 17 per cent of Liberal supporters and 12 per cent of NDP supporters said the same.

I think this has less to do with rational policy perspectives, and more to do with exposure to American sources of media, news, and other information. How and where an individual gets their news is a strong influence on their perspectives, and the American media and American-owned Canadian media are generally fairly soft or outright friendly towards the USA.
