The NDP said they’d vote against the throne speech, but then they didn’t even ask for a vote to be held? What was the point of their announcement then?
Despite their earlier statements, the NDP refused to stand and be counted in opposition to this bill. Not surprised.
Whats the point of a vote on this if its actually not needed?
I’ve seen some discussions into why it turned out this way. One that makes the most sense is the NDP wanted a recorded vote but since they aren’t an official party they can’t request it. The CPC and Bloc maybe wanted to vote no but didn’t want the government to fall so they didn’t want a vote.
Either way can’t help but feel like the NDP burned good will to not even get a vote
So there is implied general consensus or lack of major opposition to the Throne Speech; so much so that the opposition won’t even force a vote? Then what the hell was Don Davies going on about? Istg NDP be clowning harder after Jagmeet how’s that possible?
What’s interesting to me is that neither the Bloc nor the Conservatives opted to request a standing vote. That shows that the Bloc and the Conservatives are both serious about supporting this Government through the near-term.
Can someone explain why anyone would want a vote on the speech? If it didn’t pass, would they just… need to bring in another speaker?

Lots of theories as to why there wasn’t a recorded vote, so I’ll throw out another one: the Cabinet is probably in deep talks on the best way to respond to Trump’s new steel tariffs and pulling them away for a recorded vote is a waste of valuable time when adopting it on division achieves the same goal.
Basically our parliamentarians were decent to each other and put the country first.
It’s not *always* political gamesmanship.
(Side note: Props to this article for actually being correct in stating it was adopted on division without a recorded vote, the CBC article on it is practically peddling false information by implying the NDP voted for the Throne speech)
The NDP couldn’t officially demand a recorded vote because of party status technicalities
But the story is clear: the Carney-Poilievre team in full-swing
I don’t understand the NDP position on this.
They don’t have a real leader yet and aren’t likely to be able to get one before the election would have happened, but were willing to risk the ire of the public by bringing the government down over a simple procedural issue, not even a budget.
This kind of move is for when you have a new leader, not when your placeholder gets the first kick at the can. It was the dumbest thing I could think of them doing. They would have been relegated to Green Party status is they had actually added that.
