Clearly to these luddites, the fact we’re destroying our planet with human-made climate change by burning millions of gallons of oil a day is ‘woke’ – this is the selfish boomer generation fucking the planet for our children.

Trump went after immigrants, trans people, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, assistance programs like snap and Medicare, appointed a HHS director that is destroying public health and trust in vaccines, screwed the economy, screwed foreign relations, appointed an FBI director that is reversing decades of progress and trampling all over their core values, Nazis are openly marching on the streets.
Every day reform trot out another page in Trumps playbook that helped him get elected, Reform and Farage will be as bad for the UK as Trump has been for the US and anyone that is considering voting for Reform needs to seriously do some research on the parallels between what’s happening in the US, Trump’s promises and path to a second term and Reforms „proposals“ and talking points.

Since Labour have near enough already conceded the next election to Reform they should consider the emissions from further drilling baked in and allow it themselves. Use the money to build lots of windmills or whatever

Didn’t it come up that we’ve sold licenses for hundreds of blocks that were just being sat upon because the areas with the biggest reserves have already been targeted and the ones that remain are smaller and require more costly techniques to extract it? So until the price of oil increases or until the windfall taxes are reduced, they’ll remain undeveloped.
To be fair, where you drill for the oil doesn’t really make much difference to how much you use…
Why not put money into our pockets, not the Saudis, and get our oil locally rather than shipping across the world…

So the cost of extraction wouldn’t make it profitable?
Should Reform get in, God forbid, and these companies find more gas or oil in the North Sea. They will sell it on the open market, as they have always done. Our tax payers money has subsidised previous exploratory drilling, only for these fossil giants to avoid taxes or even reduce the cost at the pump. Reform would only permit this if it directly benefited them. Not us.
That sounds like the beginning of a good idea. It might be even better if they ensure that the rights to drill are owned by British companies.
Waiting for the hugely reductive and nihilistic ‘but China and India are burning fossil fuels so there’s no point us stopping’ argument to come along. I’m sure someone will say it soon enough.
We’re still using oil and gas (73.5% use gas for heating) and will be for some time, we just import it from other places. Not drilling it ourselves doesn’t make us any cleaner or greener except on paper. If we had a clean and reliable alternative then great, but we’re not ready yet. It’s estimated that we’d need to generate 81% more electricity than we already do if everyone switched to heat pumps.

The ban will have to be reversed anyway. There’s nothing in the governments plans that will stop the UK needing gas and oil and the reality is exploiting the resources on our doorstep will reduce prices since they’re set at the margins.
The stupid thing is that North Sea oil drilling peaked decades ago. Most of the economic reserves have or are running dry. And oil giants won’t do anything unless the oil price is sky high.
Who in the fuck would even consider voting for these?
Who wants – more Brexit – after the huge damage that’s already been done by it?
Who wants to exit the ECHR?
Who wants the planet to get – even more – wrecked?

While they’re obviously just aping Trump they do have a point here, one that most people don’t struggle to understand.
We are still an oil based civilization and if we have to import oil to burn we will. Not extracting it in the UK just means we’re sending our money abroad for other people to extract it.
I’m afraid not extracting oil on your territory doesn’t decrease emissions nor does it make you morally superior.
Reducing oil consumption is a demand side problem (like most problems) and restricting supply isn’t going to work. While a lot of lefty activists enjoy shouting at big capitalist oil companies the inconvenient truth is that oil companies don’t consume oil, they only dig it up. If consumers stopped buying it they would stop drilling.
I’m afraid to get anything done you have to deal with the world as it is, not how you’d like it to be.
They’re just trying to send smoke signals via the media to big oil & gas lobbyists to let them know ‘flood us with donations and lobbyist money we will push your agendas and by the time it affects our great grandchildren we will all be dead anyway’
