Addressing crime is extremely important.
However, it needs to be done right. Cant do the hard on crime thing however doing the ways in which it was done before isnt the answer either.
Largely performative, but this is a great new measure here:

The biggest issue that he needs to tackle is reducing delays in the system. We can’t even adequately deal with the current backlog. I haven’t seen anything from Carney to suggest a real interest in it, which is disheartening. I hope that changes.
there needs to be bail reform on repeat offenders for drugs, shoplifting and other crimes that are costing Cdn businesses hundreds of millions of dollars. know these are non-violent crimes but downtowns are emptying out.
provincial gov’ts need to do more around mental health and getting people into care.
I actually expect there’s a reasonably high chance Carney will go beyond these measures, which are all pre-election promises. And since then, they’ve already taken some steps to signal their shift to a tough-on-crime posture, including by naming Ruby Sahota as Secretary of State for Combatting Crime. It’s also significant that Sahota is from Brampton, a city where the Conservatives made big gains, after running a very crime focused campaign.
I agree with the expert who compares this moment in Canadian politics to Clinton’s election in the US in the 90s. I think we’re heading for a big political shift on criminal justice policy, following a cultural shift that occurred in the first half of the 2020s. I think it’s pretty safe to say that the period of time where the Liberals‘ main focus on criminal justice policy was on making laws less harsh to address racial disparities ended with Trudeau’s resignation.
