So… the author argues that to make Canada Post viable again, they should look to ban FedEx, UPS and other delivery companies from operating in Canada as they are unfair competition.
Canada Post just needs to work, it is a service for the people of Canada and is no different from health or education. Millions of Canadians still use it because the alternative does not deliver there.
Canada Post is designated as an essential service in Canada due to its critical role in maintaining the nation’s communication and logistical infrastructure. This status is further justified by the risks associated with relying on foreign carriers such as FedEx or UPS. These private foreign owned companies are not subject to the same national obligations and often prioritize profitability over equitable service. In times of disruption, whether geopolitical, economic, or logistical, outsourcing mail delivery to foreign carriers can compromise Canada’s sovereignty over its communication networks.
Unlike private carriers, Canada Post operates under a public mandate to serve every address in the country, including remote and Indigenous communities that are frequently underserved or surcharged by commercial services. Its continued operation ensures national control over vital communications, the secure delivery of sensitive documents, and the consistent functioning of federal and provincial programs.
The truth is Canada Post was not set up to fail, it was set up to serve. It operates under a public mandate to reach every Canadian, including rural and remote communities that private carriers overlook. Chronic underinvestment, political interference, and unrealistic profit expectations have created challenges, but these are imposed burdens, not evidence of structural failure. A service can struggle under pressure and still be essential.
i really wish people would stop thinking that Canada Post is supposed to make a profit. it’s ridiculous and stupid. it’s a fucking service. services cost money they aren’t supposed to make profit. it may be a nice bonus if they manage to do so but it shouldn’t be a requirement and anyone who thinks Canada Post should be profitable is delusional.
do we need *daily* mail service? maybe not. is the union probably going to whine about that? yeah probably but that’s a tough reality pill they’re eventually going to have to swallow. that fact remains, however, that Canada Post is a necessary SERVICE that needs to be funded by all Canadians for the benefit of all Canadians and like it or not that costs money. this bizarre demand that they are self-sustaining and/or profitable is ludicrous.
Frankly, I don’t see the issue of federal funds entering the mix. Let government cover some operational costs. They’re an essential service for various Canadians and frankly their urban services should, in isolation, be expected to be competitive.
Canada Post, like transit, is not supposed to make money as a business. It’s supposed to provide a service.
People either purposely miss this point or don’t understand how public service works.
