One of the NDP figures I really respect has a saying of „People Powered Politics“.
The NDP at both provincial and federal levels has grown a lot over time from the grassroots founding. I think it is important for it to remember its roots as not an establishment type enterprise.
A balance of activism style politics and being „centrist“ enough to connect with the average populace is important for accomplishing initiatives and moving things forward. I am not nearly intelligent enough to know the perfect formula for that balance in today’s world but I know that central to how the NDP moves forward at the federal level is understanding their own identity as a party.
I said elsewhere today that this is going to be one hell of an exciting leadership race.
I’ll also add something that I think is an important side point. I have noticed not just with the NDP but of politics in general right now in Canada that people don’t really understand the different areas of responsibilities of municipal governance, provincial governance, and federal governance. When we talk about housing for example that is primarily an area of municipal and provincial jurisdiction. When we talk about labour policy that is primarily an area of provincial jurisdiction. I think this basic understanding is important because if we really want things accomplished like better housing affordability and better working class protections than we need to focus the spotlight and pressure in the right places.
